Job Description:
OFFICIAL TITLE: Library Assistant II, Technical Services Library Assistant
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Electronic Resources Librarian, and Library Assistants of a Higher Grade
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May supervise student employees

General Statement of Duties: The Technical Services Library Assistant provides library technical services including processing, cataloging, and maintaining library materials to facilitate use of materials by library users.

(E) Assists with the cataloging and classification of materials in all formats according to standard library practices and procedures, e.g., Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classification systems, MARC, and OCLC. (E) Searches and updates OCLC library files to correct entries or to establish new entries. (E) Participates in projects such as de-accessioning and inventorying library materials, and enriching database of library records. (E) Performs physical processing of library materials for patron and staff use, including labeling, stamping, covering, etc. (E) Determines whether library materials need repair, and completes simple repairs. (E) Provides on-the-job training to student workers. (E) Gathers statistics and creates reports. (E) Provides customer service at the Circulation desk and checks out items in and out, issues library cards, answers patron inquiries, and resolves circulation-related issues. (E) Operates library equipment, locates and files materials, loans, and performs other clerical functions. (E) Enforces library rules and standards of appropriate conduct consistent with a college library setting; inspects library premises on a regular basis and reports issues to supervisory or other personnel, as appropriate. (E) Assists and instructs users in the operation of microfilm/microfiche readers, reader printers and/or other equipment. (E) Performs bibliographic searches for patron use and other purposes. (E) Assumes responsibility for operation of library facility in absence of supervisor, including staffing of library service points as required. (E) Participates in development and staging of library exhibits and displays. (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior at all times in relations with students, faculty, staff and library colleagues. (E) Opens and closes the library on Saturday and other days when necessary. (E) Performs other related duties as assigned within the Library Assistant classification:

Requirements:
Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time paraprofessional or clerical experience as a library assistant, or (B) any combination of the required experience and the following substitution below:
An Associate's degree or higher may be substituted for the required experience. (Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.)
Demonstrated expertise using standard computer applications including email and productivity software such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office. Ability to gather information by examining records and documents. Ability to work accurately with names, numbers, codes and/or symbols. Ability to assemble items of information according to established procedures. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Basic knowledge of library reference materials and services including dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, bibliographies, catalogs, etc. Basic knowledge of library alphabetic/numeric shelving and other filing systems. Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, maneuver wheeled book carts, and lift 35 lbs. Ability to shelve books on ground-level and top-level shelves, use a step stool, and perform repetitive bending, crouching, and reaching motions. Ability to perform physical processing handiwork with precision and accuracy. Commitment to student learning. Ability to work with diverse constituencies. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language. Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing workflows and developments in library technology and services. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to work flexibly, collaboratively, and collegially in a dynamic workplace.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. Experience working in a library technical services department.

Experience using the Koha, or other, Integrated Library System. Familiarity with MARC Records and Library of Congress Classification system.

This is a grade 12, non-exempt, full-time (37.5 hours), benefited AFSCME position. This is a 10-month position that will have 9 unpaid weeks off between the months of June and August. The anticipated start date for this position is August 19, 2024.

Bi-weekly salary is $1,712.98(annual salary is $36,829.07).

Work Schedule: Tuesday- Saturday, 8:45am- 5:00pm. Days off are Sunday and Monday.
