The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL:

Assist School Library Media Specialist in the full utilization of services, materials and resources offered to Public School students and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist students and staff in the circulating procedure of library materials.

  • Performs a variety of clerical and computer-related tasks as assigned.

  • Prepare circulation desk for services on a daily basis with needed supplies.

  • Responsible for shelving, straightening and shelf reading of library materials.

  • Pull library materials which need to be mended, discarded and/or replaced.

  • Process new library materials received for circulation.

  • Process periodicals received for circulation.

  • Maintain school library's card catalog.

  • Sort returned materials by type, location, or unit of library to which assigned.

  • Arrange returned materials numerically or alphabetically by information on spine or label, onto book carts.

  • Check to see if returned materials are overdue or are on reserve.

  • Examine returned materials for obvious damage.

  • Collect and record all library fines.

  • Record receipt of payment for lost or damaged materials.

  • Answer borrower's questions concerning circulation procedures.

  • Keep daily circulation statistics and compile a monthly report of library usage and holdings.

  • Assist School Library Media Specialist with class library schedules and scheduling of library assistants.

  • Assist in training of volunteers, and new library assistants in circulation procedures.

  • Maintain professional appearance and behave in a manner appropriate to a public setting.

  • Performs reliably, dependably with a good record of attendance, punctuality, flexibility and time management.

  • Develop work-related goals and objectives

  • Develop job-related abilities, skills and knowledge.

  • Attend library-related meetings, workshops and in-service programs.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the School Library Media Specialist.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with education/experience mix as determined by the Director of Libraries.

  • Experience prerequisite to be determined by the Director of Libraries.

  • Ability to perform clerical tasks with limited supervision and assume clerical responsibility for a major segment of the library's operations.

  • Ability to type at the required level.

  • Ability to work well with others.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

  • Ability to communicate and follow instructions.

  • Experience preferred in using photocopiers and other office equipment, including micro-computers and software programs utilized by the school libraries.

  • Willingness to keep abreast of changing technologies and to assume new responsibilities required by the introduction of new services and equipment.

  • Must exhibit the proper attitudes and personal qualities necessary to produce high quality library service.

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Performs other related work as required.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must occasionally push items of 50 pounds such as pushing on a bike or wheelchair, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 176 days/ not to exceed 30 hours per week.

SALARY: $14.16 - $16.93

FLSA STATUS: NON - EXEMPT, HOURLY

REPORT TO: Library Media Specialist and Director of Libraries

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy on evaluation.
