GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general direction, performs a variety of professional librarian functions in support of New Braunfels Public Library operations; provides reference and reader's advisory services to patrons; instructs the public in the use of library computers and equipment; coordinates and delivers library programming; and performs other specialized duties relative to area of assignment. This position has the ability to develop/advance to a Librarian II and Librarian III based on ability to meet the senior level qualifications of those positions. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Assists in ensuring the delivery of high-quality library programs and services to the community.

  • Provides customer assistance and reference/reader's advisory services to library patrons; utilizes print, non-print, and electronic resources to respond to patron inquiries, provide reader's advisory assistance, and/or locate library materials.

  • Addresses and facilitates the timely resolution of patron concerns and complaints; responds to patron requests for information in person and via telephone, fax, mail, text, and email.

  • Instructs patrons in the use of public computers, online catalogs, library databases, and mobile devices; may develop lesson plans and prepare training materials for distribution to class participants.

  • Plans, develops, promotes, and delivers library programming to the community.

  • Represents the library in meetings with the public, citizen groups and other agencies.

  • Develops annual budget requirements and monitors expenditures for an assigned area.

  • Provides training and/or supervises the work activities of assigned library personnel and/or volunteers as required; prepares staff schedules; recruits volunteers as assigned.

  • Participates in compiling statistical data and/or developing and updating library policies and procedures as required.

  • Monitors developments in the library field, including emerging technologies.

  • Participates in activities of professional associations as time permits.

  • Participates in maintaining and updating the Library's website, online calendar, social media pages, and/or E-Resources; plans, develops, promotes and delivers further outreach services such as live chat, e-books, and/or library web or social media pages.

  • Assists in application for outside funding for library programs.

  • Prepares statistical reports as requested monthly and annually.

  • Performs vacation and temporary relief as required.

  • Participates in administering and/or maintaining the Library's computer network and related peripherals; diagnoses and troubleshoots software and hardware issues; upgrades laptop computers, tablets, and software applications.

  • Oversees the instruction of patrons in the use of public computers, online catalogs, library databases, and mobile devices; develops lesson plans and prepare training materials for distribution to class participants.

  • Manages the library online resources, which includes evaluation, database acquisition, assistance with website development, patron instruction, publicity and promotion.

  • Acts as Librarian in Charge and performs related duties as assigned and performs other duties as assigned or required.

LIBRARIAN II PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Team supervisor within branch

  • Supervises and trains staff and completes staff schedules

  • Investigates complaints

  • Budget input and monitoring

  • Catalogs Library materials

  • Responsible for an area of programming at a location

  • May be required to complete all or some duties listed for Librarian I

LIBRARIAN III PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Responsible for an area of programming system wide

  • Manages Librarians or major function of the Library over multiple locations

  • Serves as a branch manager

  • Develops policy and outlines goals and objectives

  • Budget preparation and management

  • Involved in short-term and long-term planning; compiles and analyzes statistics

May be required to complete all or some duties listed for Librarian I and Librarian

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Master's Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution, or currently enrolled in one of these master's degree programs.

  • One year programming experience.

  • Preference given for public library experience.

  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License.

Required Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of library science.

  • Public library operations, services, and policies.

  • Reference, reader's advisory, circulation, and cataloging principles.

  • Principles of collection development and maintenance.

  • Library computer systems, software, and databases.

  • Specialized functions relative to area of assignment.

  • Customer service standards and protocol.

Required Skill in:

  • Coordinating and performing a variety of professional librarian functions.

  • Assisting in ensuring the delivery of high-quality library services to patrons.

  • Providing reference and reader's advisory assistance to patrons.

  • Responding to public inquiries and complaints regarding library related matters.

  • Participating in developing and maintaining assigned library collections.

  • Coordinating and performing specialized functions relative to area of assignment.

  • Serving as Librarian in Charge and coordinating library operations as required.

  • Intermediate skills using:  Microsoft Office 2016, web browsing/searching, printing, scanning, copying, faxing and email software.

  • Fundamental skills using:  mobile devices, smartphones and tablets.

  • Troubleshooting/problem solving skills.

Additional Skills and Abilities:

  • This position requires strong interpersonal skills, particularly tact and courtesy in dealing with the public and coworkers, a working knowledge of general office procedures, the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and flexibility in work schedule.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in an office environment; is subject to sitting, standing bending and reaching for extended periods of time; and must be able to safely pull or push loaded book carts and other items weighing up to forty (40) pounds, and to safely lift and carry items weighing up to thirty (30) pounds.

  • Must be able to work weekdays, weeknights, or weekends on any assigned shift; work may be scheduled based on library needs. Hours of work per week may vary depending on assigned duties; may work over 40 hours per week depending on assignment.

  • May be required to work immediately before, during or immediately after an emergency or disaster.
