Position Summary

The individual in this position provides reference and research services to students, faculty, staff, and community members; to conduct user education including designing and implementing information literacy resources; to manage and administer the library's electronic automated systems and research resources including troubleshooting and liaison with outside vendors; and to select online and print materials for the library as well as to remove/replace obsolete materials.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts reference interviews, employing question-negotiating techniques.

  • Assists students, faculty members and other library customers in locating information and resources. Requests may come from a variety of sources including in-person, telephone, email, and the internet.

  • Assists customers in using appropriate traditional or electronic resources, including the Internet, WEB based databases, and the SMSC collections.

  • Refers customers to other libraries or resource centers as appropriate, including Interlibrary Loan.

  • Identifies and assesses problems related to reference service and recommends solutions.

  • Assists Library Director in formulating customer service policies and procedures.

  • Conducts research seminars for college classes in a variety of subject areas.

  • Designs and implements information literacy learning exercises.

  • Creates reference or research support materials or services in response to student needs. Assists faculty in creating such materials.

  • Instructs customers in the use of library resources.

  • Creates and conducts faculty training workshops.

  • Supervises acquisition, reference, arrangement, description, and preservation of collections.

  • Contacts departments across all campuses to identify archival materials and ensure their preservation.

  • Develops an organization scheme for the archival materials and implements the same.

  • Maintains the digital catalog of the college archival collections.

  • Assists customers looking for information located in the college archives.

  • Oversees the audio-visual archives including the accessioning and arrangement of collections of still photographs, film, video, and audio-tapes and directs the creation of finding aids.

  • Develops and updates written College Archives Collection Policy and Procedures.

  • Carries out collection developments policies and procedures, including the removal/replacement of obsolete materials.

  • Selects library materials to fill identified gaps in the collection including eBooks.

  • Evaluates online database trial subscriptions for possible inclusion as CSM research resources.

  • Works with Library Director to ensure that distance education students have library research resources equivalent to those of traditional on-campus students.

  • Ensures the maintenance of an environment conducive to learning.

  • Conducts tours of the library when appropriate.

  • Compiles statistics for inclusion in Library Director's status reports.

  • Develops draft policy/guideline documents e.g., Information Literacy Initiative; Electronic Reserve Guidelines.

  • Substitutes, as necessary, for Library Director at meetings e.g., CSM College Technology Council; MD Community College Library Consortium.

  • Assists with circulation services as needed.

Additional Duties:

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Education and Training

  • Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited library school.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and display initiative within guidelines.

  • Excellent communications (written and oral), customer service and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with using Microsoft Office software.

  • Experience with various kinds of databases.

  • Ability to use and troubleshoot basic office equipment

Physical Requirements:

The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly.
