Are you ready for new and exciting challenges? We are in need of an Industrial Hygienist within our Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Tacoma office. In this role, you will focus on enforcing health standards by addressing existing and potential occupational hazards that can cause serious illness and disease while maintaining composure and sensitivity during difficult conversations with employers and employees. You'll be relied upon for your ability to assess exposure to noise, chemicals, blood borne pathogens, and other physical and biological agents. Your skills will also be essential in evaluating ventilation, confined spaces, personal protective equipment, and written health and safety programs.

Some of what you'll do:

  • Perform complex, safety and health surveys and audits to identify, evaluate and recommend controls for occupational health hazards, including chemical, biological and physical and determine compliance with WISHA workplace health standards.

  • Advise employers of methods to eliminate unsafe work practices, including ergonomic hazards.

  • Use industrial hygiene sampling equipment and techniques for analysis and measurement of noise, non-ionizing radiation, vibration, temperatures, and chemical exposure for comparison with exposure limits.

  • Perform opening conferences with employer and employee representatives. Conduct walk around assessments of work sites, take field notes, photos and video, and make observations.

  • Conduct interviews; review safety data sheets, written safety programs, reports, and records provided by employer and employee representatives.

  • Prepare and calibrate industrial hygiene sampling equipment for use.

  • Determine employers' compliance and non-compliance with safety and health standards and take appropriate actions consistent with laws, standards, manuals, and policies.

  • Critically evaluate use of protective methods, personal protective equipment, safe work practices, and engineering controls.

  • Prepare and present verbal and written reports of investigations.

  • Make suggestions for abatement and provide materials to assist with compliance. Follow up on progress and effectiveness of changes instituted.

  • Answer questions from the public regarding health hazards and applicable standards on the phone and in person.

Qualifications

Who should apply?

Industrial Hygienist 3 In-training

A Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology or related field AND 1 year of experience as an industrial hygienist, safety and health manager, safety and health consultant, or as a chemist or engineer working on environmental health or air sanitation problems. A Master's degree involving major study in industrial hygiene will substitute for 1 year of experience.

Industrial Hygienist 3

A Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology or related field AND 3 years of experience as an industrial hygienist. (Industrial Hygiene experience must include the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and management of occupational health hazards such as chemical, physical and biological).

Please Note: A Master's degree involving major study in industrial hygiene will substitute for 1 year of industrial hygiene experience.

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene is desirable.

  • Valid Driver License.

Within the Department of Labor & Industries, conditional to serious hazard exposure as defined by RCW 49.17.180(6): Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Specialists will be compensated basic salary plus ten percent (10%) for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present. The Opportunity: Social Service Specialist 3 Do you want to help families and communities safely care for their children? You can help reduce child abuse and neglect and improve the lives of children and families. We are seeking a proactive learner and resilient contributor to provide coverage to our Child Protective Services, Family Voluntary Services and Children and Family Welfare Services programs in Region 5 offices. You will assess complex family situations, interview children and parents, assess child safety, develop plans to protect children in their own homes when needed, and offer services to children and families. Some of what you'll do: * Investigate and assess assigned cases of child abuse and neglect to include conducting Initial Face-to-Face visits with the child victims and make contact with parent/subjects and collateral contacts * Gather information necessary to assess child safety and determine the service needs of families, and develop and implement case plans that protect children from harm. * Provide goal directed, task centered, and time limited crisis counseling and intervention to adolescents and families. * Provide intensive social work services to children and families designed to remedy parenting deficiencies and strengthen parenting and coping skills. * Provide referrals for assessments and resources that respond to the identity, cultural, and psycho-emotional needs of children and clients. * Implement culturally-relevant, ADA sensitive, and individualized service plans with clients which are goal-directed, have specific behavioral objectives and are time-limited. * Prepare and file dependency petitions, and other legal documents related to the establishment of dependency. * Provides short-term court ordered and voluntary placement of children with licensed foster parents or relative placements to provide care and protection. What we are looking for: Professionals who have one year of experience as a Social Service Specialist 2 OR Bachelor's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, or an allied field, and three years of paid social service experience performing functions equivalent to a Social Service Specialist 2. OR Master's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, or an allied field and two years of paid social service experience equivalent to a Social Service Specialist 2. A practicum will substitute for the one year of paid social service experience. AND One year of paid social service experience must include assessing risk and safety to children and providing direct family-centered practice services (strengthening and preserving family units). Degrees must be obtained from an accredited institution.
