L&l's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) administers the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) law by developing and enforcing rules that protect workers from hazardous job conditions, helping employers and other interested parties to protect the safety and health of Washington's workforce.

DOSH is currently recruiting for 2 of the following positions:

The Occupational Safety and Health Professional (OSHPRO 3) Industrial Hygienist plays an important role in achieving the mission of DOSH Standards and Technical Services Program through advanced industrial hygiene technical knowledge. Using technical expertise, this position has statewide responsibility to research, develop, draft, interpret, and recommend highly complex occupational safety and health policies, procedures, and rules. This position will provide critical support for the agency's mission to "Keep Washington Safe and Working" through the development of policy affecting the health and safety of Washington's workers.

Reporting to the Industrial Hygiene Technical Policy Manager, the OSHPRO3 provides technical assistance on safety and health rules such as noise, lead, chemical hazard communication, respirators, airborne contaminants, confined spaces, and other subject areas. Customers include internal DOSH and L&I staff, employers, employees, employer associations, employee associations, and other stakeholder groups with an interest in  Division of Occupational Safety and Health Standards and the WISH Act.

The OSHPRO 3 Industrial Hygienist is also a designated speaking agent for the Department, acting as a representative at National and Regional Conferences and as a technical expert at the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals (BIIA) and the State Legislature.

For this position, telework is permitted full time with the requirement to report to the office for meetings.  In addition, this position will require travel to a variety of events to provide presentations and training upon business needs throughout the state.  The assigned duty station for this position may be in any of our service locations within the state of Washington.

  • Uses industrial hygiene technical knowledge to research, develop, draft, and interpret highly complex occupational safety and health rules.

  • Researches industrial hygiene topic areas to make constructive recommendations for DOSH code revision, to clarify industrial hygiene enforcement policies, and to develop rules.

  • With guidance from management, makes decisions regarding policy interpretation of occupational safety and health regulations and laws.

  • Provides recommendations to management, labor organizations and representatives, company officials, DOSH consultation staff, industrial safety and health inspectors, industrial hygienists, civic groups, governmental agencies, and others interested in or affected by safety and health policy.

  • Writes DOSH-initiated regulations, DOSH Directives and other policy documents.

  • Presents at stakeholder meetings and public hearings regarding potential and proposed changes to DOSH policy.

  • Investigates variance requests and makes recommendations.

  • Provides industrial hygiene technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders and supports the DOSH Compliance and Consultation Programs.

  • Supports the appeals process; reviews files prior to hearings for completeness, testifies as a state's witness during appeals actions, gives legal depositions as an expert witness, advises the Assistant Attorney Generals, Hearing Officers and others in their preparation for hearings, conferences, and settlements.

  • Reviews Citations and Notices of Violation to ensure proposed/alleged violations are in accordance with departmental policies.

  • Works with industry associations (labor & management) to ensure adequacy of outreach materials.

REQUIRED:

  • Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver license.

PLUS one of the following:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or related field AND Four years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience OR two years as an Occupational Safety and Health Professional 2 in DOSH.

OR

  • Master's Degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or similar field AND Two years of paid industrial safety related professional experience.

OR

  • Four years of full-time journey level paid industrial safety related experience in one or more of the following industries: Government, military, public health or related safety and health field.

DESIRED: 

  • Current certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) granted by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) granted by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
