The Division of Social Services (DSS) provides direct services that address issues of poverty, family violence and exploitation. We aim to prevent abuse, neglect and exploitation of vulnerable citizens, and promote self-reliance and self-sufficiency for individuals and families.
Child Support Services (CSS) calls:
Deal with complex calls regarding proper application of CSS policy
Maintain courteous attitude when dealing with difficult callers
Use tact and diplomacy to diffuse emotional or antagonistic situations
Explain to callers how CSS policy affects case handling and outcomes
Regularly review manuals and policy updates to ensure personal practices are current and correct
Understand and appreciate the confidential nature of CSS information
Maintain a professional attitude with employers and other child support offices both within and out of state to ensure cooperation and understanding of CSS policies
Trace missing and misapplied funds through SMI
Data Entry
Update ACTS with address changes, employment status and other information
Enter appropriately worded event notes into ACTS to document interactions
Determine if CSS agent work list is needed and send properly drafted work lists
Generate ACTS documents for callers
To receive credit for all of your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form. Qualified candidates must document on the application that they possess all of the following:
Experience in a Child Support Services (CSS) office with an assigned caseload
Experience working in the CSS Automated Collections Tracking System (ACTS) database
Experience working directly with the public one on one maintaining confidential information
Skills demonstrated in accounting principles and techniques in financials
Skills demonstrated in conflict resolution/handling complaints
Some state job postings say you can qualify by an 'equivalent combination of education and experience.' If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. See oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for details.
High school of General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of related administrative experience;
OR
