This is an advanced and highly responsible administrative, technical and analytical work for the Chief of Staff. An Employee in this classification perform a wide variety of complex tasks requiring initiative, independent judgement and extensive working knowledge of the Chief of Staffs projects. Duties include researching rules, regulations and policies for the Chief of Staff and their departments. Emphasis is placed on relieving the official of administrative detail and work entails dealing with political, confidential and sensitive issues requiring a high degree of discretion and tact involving continual inter-departmental relations and extensive public contact. This classification is distinguished from the lower-level executive assistant role due to more advanced levels in scope of work, complexity, responsibility, and autonomy. This position reports directly to the Chief of Staff.
Note: This position has been designated by the Manatee County Commission as serving at the will and pleasure of the County Administrator. Employees so designated may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Working Conditions
Indoor/Outdoor situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 25 lbs. alone; up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
Job Description
Essential Functions

Manages the Chief of Staff's Office
Interfaces with constitutional officers, the general public, other staff members and other government and community agencies.
Attends Commission meetings, special events, forums, and other advisory committees and meetings.
Plans, creates, and coordinates special events at the direction of the Chief of Staff.
Researches and monitors issues.
Reviews and summarizes memos, agendas, news articles, reports, and other communications in order to brief the Chief of Staff regarding content relevant to the County business.
Gathers source materials for articles or speeches and assists in drafting and proofreading letters, confidential papers, memos, newsletters, speeches and articles, composes letters and memoranda for the Chief of Staff's signature.
Coordinates and schedules meetings and appointments for the Chief of Staff and makes travel arrangements as necessary.
Routes mail to proper department and responds to routine correspondence, annotates, and delivers non-routine correspondence to the Chief of Staff.
Maintains files and records for the Chief of Staff's office.
Prepares a variety of routine and special reports from source material in files, and confidential materials.
Coordinates presentations for proclamations.
Performs other related work (including weather or extreme emergency duties) as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Business or related field.
Two (2) years of administrative experience.
Valid driver's license required with valid Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
