Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Legal Branch Deputy General Counsels, the Legal Support Supervisor oversees the work of legal support staff who provide legal support services to attorneys. Incumbents may perform legal secretarial work in addition to supervision of the legal support team.

Occasional travel may be required within and/or outside the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.)

Working Conditions

Work Environment:

  • Work in a high-rise office building and telecommute in accordance with Department policy.

Physical Abilities:

  • Constant computer and keyboard use including continuous data entry that requires sitting and staring at the computer screen for a long period of time.

  • Occasional transporting of documents in binders or boxes over 25 lbs. but no more than 50 lbs.

  • Occasional pulling and pushing cart with mail over 25 but no more than 50 pounds (lbs.) to be distributed or collected on multiple floors.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Ability to Type at a speed of 45 words per minute.

  • Ability to oversee legal support work, meet deadlines, and perform under pressure.

  • Demonstrated skills in various Microsoft applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point and Outlook.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including completion of business writing and correspondence.

  • Experience in the administration of a well-organized legal office and supervision of a staff size 5-15.

  • Experience with hiring, coaching, mentoring, and performance management.

  • Experience processing a large variety of legal documents, including filing legal documents with the state and federal courts.

  • Knowledge of: Technical legal terms and various legal forms and documents and their processing; modern office methods, supplies, and equipment.
