Introduction

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

GRADE

Grade 10This position offers a salary range of $42,056 - $60,465, with potential for advancement up to $66,759 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $60,465

Main Purpose of Job

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a candidate to provide secretarial and clerical support for several attorneys to assist in meeting the deadlines and goals of the Contract Litigation Unit.�The Legal Secretary is expected to type and/or edit pleadings, briefs, correspondence, memoranda and documents from written form, or existing computer-generated material for several attorneys in a timely manner using the proper format,� and draft basic pleadings and transactional documents for review and/or signature of the attorney.� This position is also responsible for reviewing and organizing documents in preparation for trial, meetings, court filings and for other purposes as requested within the unit.� Keeping accurate and up-to-date litigation and/or subject matter files and performing regular maintenance of files assuring appropriate location, labeling, and organization is a key aspect of the role.�The Legal Secretary is responsible for data entry in a case management system.� Customer service aspects of the role include answering and screening phone calls for the unit in a professional and courteous manner, provide assistance and/or take� clear and accurate messages, opening, reviewing, and distributing incoming mail to attorneys, scheduling meetings� via Outlook/Teams calendars in addition to any other events or activities, including, but not limited, to depositions, that require an appearance and/or response.�Scheduling responsibilities may include making necessary arrangements for attorneys, including, but not limited to, travel, court reporter, conference rooms and ensuring confirmation of the arrangements. Finally, this role requires the Legal Secretary to review, understand, and adhere to OAG policies, court rules, and procedures to ensure appropriate handling and/or filing of documents.��

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.�Experience: Two to three years of experience as a legal secretary to include keyboarding legal briefs, pleadings, affidavits, subpoenas and other legal documents; maintaining case files, schedules and logs and verifying legal citations and references.��Notes:�1.\tCandidates may substitute additional secretarial or other clerical experience on a year-for-year basis for the required education.2.\tCandidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Legal man classifications or Paralegal specialty codes in the administrative support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess:1.\tExperience with case management databases.2.\tExperience with scheduling depositions, court reporters, and record retention.
