Pay Schedule I, Grade 21, Regular Schedule: 35 hours per week

A vacancy exists in the Police Department.

A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below.

Current and future vacancies occurring within the class may be filled from the list of eligible applicants.

Examples of Duties

Under general supervision, performs a full range of legal secretarial work including the processing of various legal documents.

  • Produces reports, correspondence, bills, legal opinions, deeds, contracts, affidavits, pleadings, motions, depositions, demurrers, briefs, manuscripts, or other legal documents.

  • Prepares, drafts and processes some legal documents, following the cases through court procedures or administrative settlements.

  • Checks legal references and proofreads legal documents.

  • Sets up and maintains files, and indexes office records and legal documents.

  • Maintains accurate tickets of court trial assignments of the professional staff.

  • Composes and routes correspondence.

  • Operates office machinery such as fax machines, photocopiers, calculators, and typewriters.

  • Uses automated office systems such as word processing equipment and/or computers.

  • Takes and transcribes dictation in positions where such skills are required.

Examples of Other Duties

  • May act as clerk in court.

  • May prepare case histories for cases being brought into court.

  • May train or coordinate the work of other secretarial or clerical personnel.

  • May perform receptionist duties.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.

Plus

Two years' experience in legal secretarial, legal stenographic, or closely related work.

Or

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an A.A. degree in legal secretarial training.

(Additional qualifying experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.)

Proof ofLicenses, Certifications and Education

Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferredqualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

Proof of Degree Equivalency

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Conditions of Employment

Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System, with very limited exceptions.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of this classification is essentially sedentary with occasional walking, standing, lifting, or other limited physical activity. The work also involves the sustained operation, on a production basis, of office devices such as typewriters, word processors, or data entry devices.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation

Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.
