The mission of the District Attorney's Office is to seek justice through:

  • Promoting accountability for criminal offenders.

  • Interpreting, enforcing and executing law.

  • Working cooperatively with members of the justice system.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Independently performs a variety of responsible administrative legal support activities according to established practice and procedures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of a Legal Assistant Supervisor, who assigns work, sets goals, and reviews work for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with department policies and goals.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision of employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification.

  • Updating computer with changes from daily court calendar such as attorney and courtroom assignments and comparing calendars with courts by email.

  • Accessing OJIN/eCourt to verify court actions and compare data with eProsecutor.

  • Running computer reports and disseminating them to office staff.

  • Updating warrant cases by adding events, uploading documents, running updating CCH reports, and scanning physical files.

  • Receiving, sorting, and compiling intake from area agencies for file processing.

  • Reviewing data for charging and creating computer case files and assigning cases for prosecution per charge category

  • Initiating criminal history reports and filing in appropriate case.

  • Prepares computer for recording testimony.  Signs in witnesses and makes entries in computer for mileage and days served, victim's names and addresses. Answers telephone and makes calls tracking down witnesses. Coordinates testimony by video.

  • Creates and files documents with courts (Motion and Order) and juror members. Makes changes on indictments.

  • Maintains cash box - pays witnesses, orders money and balances cash box daily.

  • Keeps stats for payroll for jurors.

  • Coordinates institution tours.  Prepares instructions, communicates with institution staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • High school diploma, or equivalent; AND
  • Two years of experience in office and secretarial work; OR
  • Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.

PREFERENCS

  • Supplemental secretarial training courses

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires possession of, or obtain within 30 days of hire, Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certification.

  • Must pass a criminal history background investigation, which includes fingerprinting; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this classification.

  • This is a safety sensitive/special needs position. Final candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, including testing for marijuana.   • This assignment is represented by a union.

  • This is a full-time position, which is eligible for overtime.

  • Typical Work Schedule:  Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, with flexibility depending upon the needs of the department and program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and techniques; English composition, spelling, and grammar; arithmetic and general record/bookkeeping practices; modern office equipment and machinery and their intended use; a variety of computer systems and software.

Skill and abilities to accurately and effectively perform the various assigned tasks and duties following general procedures and program policies; meet and assist the general public and staff in a courteous and professional manner; use tact and judgment in dealing with the public concerning sensitive and confidential matters; understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions, communications, and procedures; apply newly assigned procedures and practices to specific work assignments; type accurately and at an acceptable rate of speed; access and use various computer systems and software; make decisions independently in accordance with established policies; provide backup to other positions as needed.

Bends; carries items, grasping, handling; hears up to 10 ft. away; lifts up to 10 lbs.; reaches; repetitive motion of hands and wrists; sees up to 10 ft.; sits for extended periods of time; hear at a normal speech level; speaks with a clear and audible voice; walking throughout department; possible exposure to office chemicals.
