Legal Instructor (Public Safety Training Specialist 1) (Part-Time) - Multiple Vacancies

This recruitment is for multiple, part-time positions located in Salem, OR (4190 Aumsville Hwy SE) and is not represented by a union. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.

What you will be doing:

The purpose of this position is to instruct public safety students, in accordance with prepared lesson plans that complement the board-approved curricula.

You will instruct a variety of criminal law classes as well as juvenile law, procedural law, use of force law, and report writing, present officer in court and mock trial training; exercise a high level of communication skills to deliver effective presentations while maintaining classroom control and an active learning environment. The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) oversees the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. DPSST is also the regulatory agency that enforces employment and training standards for the above listed public safety disciplines and licenses proprietary security managers, security contractors and officers, polygraph examiners, and private investigators.

  • Instructors who live more than 75 miles from the Academy and teach more than one day per week will be reimbursed mileage for one round trip in addition to lodging and meal expenses. Exceptions may be authorized with prior supervisory approval.

Minimum Qualifications:

Three (3) years of full-time professional level experience as a prosecuting attorney, juvenile attorney or judge in the state of Oregon.

This experience must have included practical application and knowledge of criminal law and delivering structured training sessions or on-the-job training.

Successful candidates selected to move forward will meet the minimum qualifications and present the requested skills/desired attributes within their application material and cover letter. Note: You do not need to have all of these qualities to be eligible for this position.

  • Experience providing training on legal issues, including criminal law classes, juvenile law, procedural law, use of force law, and report writing, and other related topics.

  • Three (3) years' experience working in a legal setting.

  • Experience providing training to public safety professionals.

  • Experience working alongside public safety professionals from different disciplines.

  • Experience collaborating with diverse perspectives.
