We are seeking a Legal Editor to join our Commentary team. The Legal Editor edits news stories, commentary, and other editorial content for publication. Works with commentary staff on accepting and rejecting incoming outside articles, and helps to assign and develop analysis articles. Writes and edits weekly magazine content, including From the Editor features. Helps supervise and perform final magazine production and quality control. Tasks may vary depending on team needs as determined by the publication Editor-in-Chief. Serves as the primary backup for the editor.


Knowledge & Skills:

  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of writing and editing concepts and principles
  • Must be able to evaluate content for grammar, clarity, and coherence
  • Ability to build, nurture, manage and maintain relationships with outside authors.
  • Technical expertise in tax-related subject matter, generally acquired through education, but may also be acquired on the job
  • Ability to apply knowledge of tax law and writing concepts in a flexible, appropriate manner to diverse media and formats
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure in a team environment
  • Good computer skills, including a working knowledge of MS Windows and MS Word
  • Familiarity with online publishing and web-content management.
  • Highly motivated and well-organized


  • J.D. (strongly preferred) or college degree in English, journalism, or related field required
  • At least two years of experience in writing, editing or copy editing print and electronic products, including experience in substantive editing of print documents for online presentation
  • Experience managing relationships with external authors or customers.
  • Previous experience in tax publishing or practice preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard style manuals

Partners with others in Marketing department, including marketing managers and designers, to create and maintain content.</p><p>Job Responsibilities</p><ul><li><p>Reviews and updates content, removing outdated content, writing and editing new content as necessary (working with subject-matter experts and other partners throughout the System), and revising pages/sites for optimal usability.</p></li><li><p>Works to promote increased use of the sites by organizing pages in a easy-to-understand, usable fashion.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that content is correct and easy to read. Ensures that the sites support Inova's brand and messages, working in partnership with others in the Marketing department or the System.</p></li><li><p>Optimizes Web sites' architecture for effective navigation by customers and staff.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that content and images meet Inova's quality and graphic standards.</p></li><li><p>Helps evaluate, select and manage software, hardware, materials, procedures and, if appropriate, vendors for the enhancement of the sites.</p></li><li><p>Using web-log analysis tool, monitors, analyzes and creates reports on web sites' metrics. Demonstrated experience as editor/writer in a fast-paced, goal-oriented communications environment, working with both print and electronic products.</p><p>Experience</p><p>5-7 years of solid experience in writing and editing for the Web, integrating print and electronic marketing and communications campaigns, and working with content-management systems.
