Position Summary & Responsibilities
Legal Assistants for the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts play a crucial part of the Board's litigation team. Together with attorneys and support specialists review, analyze, and present cases involving allegations of professional negligence or conduct issues related to licensed practitioners of the healing arts in Kansas. Currently, there are approximately 29,000 licensees that fall under the jurisdiction of the Board.
Legal Assistants in the Board's litigation department work closely with attorneys in preparing cases for litigation, maintaining litigation files, handling discovery, and negotiating and litigating cases to their final resolution. In addition to such duties as organizing and indexing medical records within litigation files or preparing exhibits for hearings, Legal Assistants also have a more direct role in litigation and will often attend and assist litigation attorneys in hearings and depositions. Additional duties may include:
Preparing subpoenas
Preparation evidentiary notebooks for hearings
Contacting, interviewing, and coordinating witnesses
Assisting with legal or medical research
Maintaining litigation calendar
Drafting legal documents
Reviewing transcripts of hearings and depositions
Drafting discovery
Contacting and working with licensees
