The Office of the Kansas Attorney General (OAG) is accepting applications to fill a Legal Assistant position to support its Criminal Division in the Economic Crimes section, which prosecutes complex fraud, organized theft, and other general white collar matters.
This position performs paraprofessional legal and clerical work for a team of attorneys, law enforcement agents, and support staff. Daily duties might include e-filing motions with the appropriate Kansas court, updating case files, managing discovery of case materials, contacting witnesses, coordinating service of subpoenas and summons, advising attorneys of upcoming deadlines and needs, and assisting agents with opening new investigations.
Working collaboratively in a team environment with a positive, make-it-happen attitude and a willingness to assist others is essential. A successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, punctual, and capable of working with a high degree of accuracy. A strong candidate will also be able to demonstrate interest and initiative in improving the work of the Economic Crimes section.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Assists in drafting and filing legal documents (i.e., pleadings, correspondence and other legal documents) in connection with legal proceedings before state and federal courts.
Schedules witnesses to appear and briefs witnesses on court proceedings prior to appearances, as needed.
Coordinates subpoena process by completing the content of subpoenas, obtaining documents needed to accompany subpoenas, and assuring that subpoenas are served in a timely manner.
Prepares and maintains case files in both paper and digital form; compiles trial and case information.
Maintains and updates the electronic document management system (LawBase); scans documents for electronic storage.
Compiles information and prepares trial notebooks.
Assists with preparing exhibits.
Prepares discovery and ensures that discovery is sent to opposing counsel in a timely fashion.
Assists with various administrative functions including, but not limited to:
processing incoming and outgoing mail
answering incoming telephone calls
filing documents
office supply maintenance
photocopying reports
proofreading documents
maintaining attorney calendars
scheduling travel arrangements
delivering and/or filing documents
gathering information and assisting the First Assistant Attorney General in preparing regular updates for the Deputy Attorney General and the Attorney General on the section's work and activities.
Assists other paraprofessionals and Assistant Attorneys General as needed.
Assists with section projects and reports, which may include data entry and information compilation.
Travels as needed (funded by OAG) to attend training and/or support the work of the Economic Crimes section. This might include occasionally attending trials or preliminary hearings.

TRAVEL:
You may need to travel to locations to competently and diligently discharge the assigned duties. Limited in-state travel may be required. A valid driver's license is required when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
