Summary

The Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice, Commercial Litigation Branch/New York Field Office is seeking a qualified and experienced Legal Assistant for a permanent appointment. The Legal Assistant will be expected to assist in the management of the Section's litigation and provide support to the legal staff in performing critical duties.

Responsibilities

As a Legal Assistant, GS-0986-07/08, typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Establishing, coordinating, and maintaining litigation case files for assigned cases.

  • Assisting attorneys in analyzing and evaluating information, gathering material and authorities, and compiling draft reports and memoranda for use by attorneys.

  • Assisting attorneys in responding to inquiries about cases received from the courts, client agencies, fact and expert witnesses, etc., in directing inquiries to the appropriate person.

  • Preparing non-legal correspondence for signature by the Director and other attorneys, such as transmittals, acknowledgements, and requests for information concerning case matters.

  • Establishing and maintaining legal reference files such as appropriate scientific and technical articles, expert witness reference materials, and materials on current litigation issues, etc.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National

Qualifications

  • To qualify for the GS-07 position, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service such as: Compiling and abstracting information; establishing and maintaining automated and working case file systems; and initiating and composing standardized legal forms routinely needed for specific legal actions.

  • To qualify for the GS-08 position, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service such as: compiling draft reports and memoranda for use by attorneys in preparing opinions, briefs, motions, pleadings, and other legal documents; assisting in requesting and tracking information from sensitive record sources such as medical records, social security and employment files, and the Internal Revenue Service.

  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES: * Inputs case information in database management system. * Assists immigration judge in court hearings with administrative duties, e.g., distribute documents to parties, receive documents from parties, print out judge's order, update case management system, etc. * Covers front window in lobby area. * Answers phones. * Maintains records of proceedings.
