Job Description and Duties

The California Civil Rights Department is looking to hire an eDiscovery Specialist! We are rapidly growing as the nation's largest state civil rights agency. Our eDiscovery staff are important members of our civil rights mission, providing case support specifically with Electronic Discovery and Electronically Stored Information (ESI). We work alongside passionate and dedicated attorneys, investigators, paralegals, and secretaries. The eDiscovery Specialist works under the supervision of the Legal Manager, providing complex technical ESI support in State and Federal civil litigations as well as government investigations. This position will work alongside other eDiscovery staff consisting of the Legal Manager, an eDiscovery Attorney, and another eDiscovery Analyst. The Specialist uses powerful discovery review software tools and is issued a department laptop and smartphone. The Specialist will continuously learn in the rapidly developing field of Electronic Discovery and help grow CRD's capabilities. Applicants should be attentive to fine details, be familiar with legal terminology and law office practices, and understand the importance of deadlines. CRD employees are privy to high profile case information and should exercise discretion and sensitivity in handling work product and evidence.

This job classification is represented by the SEIU 1000, bargaining unit 1. Successful passing of a one-year probationary period will grant permanent civil service status.

Working Conditions

The demands described below represent those that must be met by the incumbent to successfully perform the job's essential functions.

  • Requires daily use of a personal computer and related software applications at a workstation.

  • Requires ability to lift case files, office supplies, books and manuals (up to 20 lbs.).

  • Requires ability to complete tasks that require reaching, bending, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties.

  • Requires prolonged sitting and or standing at a workstation for 6.5 to 7 hours per day.

  • Requires dependability and excellent attendance records.

  • Some litigation projects may require overtime.

Department Information

The Civil Rights Department (CRD or Department) is the civil rights enforcement agency for the State of California. CRD's mission is to protect all people in California from employment, housing and public accommodation discrimination, human trafficking, and hate violence.

The CRD is the largest state civil rights enforcement agency in the country. It enforces the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), Unruh Civil Rights Act, Disabled Persons Act, Ralph Civil Rights Act, and the California Trafficking Victims Protection Act. The Department has jurisdiction over both private and public entities operating within the State of California, including corporate entities, private sector companies that contract with the State of California, and all State departments and local governments.

The CRD receives, investigates conciliates, and initiates individual and systemic discrimination complaints in its five offices throughout California. CRD litigates individual, class, group and systemic cases in all California jurisdictions, including state and federal courts. It leads education and outreach efforts to stakeholders and the public, and has an active regulatory and legislative program.

Telework Opportunity

California Civil Rights Department supports telework for employees who can perform their essential functions remotely, as operationally allowed. Travel expenses from your home to your assigned headquarters location is considered a normal commute and are not reimbursable.
