Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban planning. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT Workplace Inclusion & Sustainable Employment (WISE) and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.

HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the communities we serve with thoughtful practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners and more.

Located within HPS, the Department of Public Administration offers a nationally ranked NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration program and the Ph.D. program in Public Administration and Management. The department, which has a long tradition of local community engagement, also offers undergraduate degrees in Nonprofit Leadership Studies and Urban Policy and Planning, as well as an undergraduate minor in Public Administration.

With 12 faculty and two staff members, the department is an active unit that values student service, externally funded research, and engaging community stakeholders to support the public good. The Center for Public Management is located in the department to support this mission.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

The Department of Public Administration at the University of North Texas seeks an outstanding and energetic full-time, on-campus lecturer with expertise in the field of urban policy and planning to begin in August 2024. This is a professional track, one-year appointment on the Denton, Texas, campus.

The position will primarily serve the undergraduate Urban Policy and Planning degree program and will support the broader course offerings within the Department. The candidate selected for this position will be expected to engage in high-quality and innovative instruction in both traditional and non-traditional formats; serve as appropriate on department, college, and university committees as well as participate in professional organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in urban planning, or a closely related discipline;

• Evidence of experience with instructional technology (instructional software, learning management systems such as Canvas) and ability to teach in traditional and non-traditional formats and settings (on-campus, off-campus, evenings, online);

• Demonstrated ability to teach the core planning courses for the BA in Urban Policy and Planning

Preferred Qualifications

• ABD candidates in urban planning from a PAB-accredited planning program

• Ph.D. in urban planning from a PAB-accredited planning program

• AICP certification
