Brandeis University invites applications for lecturers in the Department of Psychology to teach one section of Biological Bases of Motivation (PSYC 15a) during the Fall 2024 semester. The course will be taught Tuesday/Friday at 9:35-10:55. The major objective of this course is to help students understand motivation from biological, behavioral, and cognitive / social theoretical perspectives and develop an understanding of how those processes interact to motivate human behavior and thought. Special emphasis will thereby be placed on the biological basis of motivation. The course will achieve this objective by addressing the above topics in four sections:

Presentation of neural basis of motivation, individual brain structures involved in motivation, and the role of hormones. Discussion of fundamentals of regulation (e.g., homeostasis) and needs, specifically physiological needs (thirst, hunger, and sex). Discussion of disorders associated with physiological needs (e.g., addiction, eating disorders). Expansion from physiological needs to psychological and implicit needs as well as extrinsic motivation.

Essential & Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • Lecturing minimum of three hours weekly.

  • Preparing lectures and course materials.

  • Conducting study sessions, as required.

  • Holding office hours.

  • Grading exams & assigning grades.

  • Supervision of teaching assistants.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Previous experience teaching university-level psychology courses

  • Demonstrated understanding or current research in the field.

  • Ph.D. degree in Psychology or a related discipline, or the equivalent.

This appointment is to a position that is in a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 509.
