Position Summary: The Technology Teacher will be responsible for teaching Technology/Engineering, Coding/Robotics & Digital Production. Middle School science and robotics teachers are expected to assist students in achieving a deep understanding of the scientific concepts embedded in the curriculum in order to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills. Programming and robotics will focus on computer programming and languages and robotics will incorporate Lego EV3 Mindstorms. Digital Production will incorporate various components of television and video production including other various industry tools. Teaching staff members will instruct children in their charge in accordance with the curriculum and program of study adopted by the Board of Education. It is the teacher's role to ensure student learning by engaging students with authentic challenges that allow for assessment that measures growth and informs future instruction.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or University. Experience teaching basic computer coding, working knowledge of LEGO robotics, and television production. Appropriate teaching certificate.

Essential Duties: The Technoloy Teacher has the duties and responsibilities commonly associated with this position, including (but not limited to) the following, which are performed directly or through the proper delegation of authority, within the framework of the general laws of New Jersey, the regulations of the NJ State Department of Education, the policies and rules of the Nutley School District, and the terms of the contract with the Nutley Education Association, with all of which he/she is expected to be familiar. As well, the position is responsible for duties commonly associated with communication positions, which are performed directly or through the proper delegation of authority.

Position Objective: To introduce students to the fields of computer programming, robotics and multimedia creation.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

  • Help develop and implement curriculum while incorporating necessary resources focusing on digital citizenship, technology/engineering, computer programming/coding, robotics, and digital production.

  • Administer evaluations throughout the program's duration to assess students' understanding of engineering, robotics, computer programming/coding, and digital production concepts.

  • Guide students to make connections between classroom learning and their own prior knowledge and experiences.

  • Stay current of best practices in STEM activities including enginerring, robotics, computer programming/coding, digital production, and the relation to 21st Century skills and careers.

  • Maintain and manage all media production, robotics, and computing equipment.

  • Make recommendations on software and programs for the classes.

  • Communicate student and course successes through digital platforms (website, videos, etc.)

  • Document student progress, performance and other related data.

  • Technology/Engineering & Coding & Robotics

  • Explore the science and technology behind robots and learn how robotics applies to everyday modern life. Enable students to gain an understanding of the history, in addition to exploring contemporary happenings in robotics.

  • Teach students to design, build, communicate and operate robotic automation equipment while challenging them to think critically, solve problems and apply technology-based tools effectively and safely.

  • Support groups of students in building and programming their own robots through project-based learning activities.

  • Teach introductory computer programming/coding skills to create animations, games, and interactive projects.

  • Teach skills necessary to communicate clearly, cooperate within teams, solve mathematical, scientific and logistical problems, and present findings.

  • Digital Production

  • Prepare individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to the production of television programs, and related operations, under the supervision of broadcast and studio managers, directors, editors, and producers.

  • Teaching television studio production skills including pre and postproduction through hands-on project-based learning activities.

  • Television studio operations and management including sound, lighting, and camera operation and maintenance, production preparation, broadcast engineering, and video editing using current computer applications.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Upholds and enforces school, administrative, board and state rules, regulations and policies.

  • Implements the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.

  • Assumes responsibility for condition of assigned room(s) and for equipment and materials issued for his/her use.

  • Communicates with parents and school personnel as necessary to discuss pupil progress under direction of the building principal.

  • Maintains required records, completes reports, and handles other routine assignments in an appropriate and punctual manner.

  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs as assigned.

  • Maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive school and classroom environment.

  • Develops lesson plans and assists in the selection of textbooks and other instructional materials to adapt to the curriculum.

  • Maintains professional development through participation in such activities as in-service education, workshops, and self-selected professional growth activities.

  • Attends school-related night activities when necessary and according to school policy.

  • Maintains a safe school environment.

  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve learning, social, and attitude problems.

  • Promotes satisfactory pupil progress and growth toward curriculum objectives

  • Groups students for instructional purposes or activities so as to enhance pupil performance and provide for individual needs.

  • Performs other duties or responsibilities assigned by the building principal or central office administrators.

Evaluation of Performance: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the New Jersey Administrative Code and Board of Education Policy.

Additional Responsibilities: Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal, department supervisor, or superintendent may assign or delegate.

Computer Skills: Proficient in computer applications pertinent to support the position including extensive knowledge of Apple OSX, iMovie, Adobe Photoshop, A/V setup and connectivity, Lego Mindstorms EV3, Google Apps for Education, Google Suite, and any current media production technologies (if applicable).
