Deerfield Academy is hiring a part-time Learning Support Specialist to work with highly engaged students, Sunday - Thursday, 25 hours per week during the academic year. Previous experience supporting executive functioning skill development and/or tutoring algebra, geometry, chemistry, and physics is required.
General Summary
Reporting to the Director of Academic Support and collaborating with the Academic Affairs Office, the Learning Support Specialist tutors individual students and small groups to encourage the development of effective study skills and habits for students with a wide range of learning needs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Meet with self-identified or Academy-identified students who seek to develop fundamental study skills to support their academic objectives:
Meet with designated students weekly to support study skills development (e.g., executive function, organization, time management, note-taking, test preparation, etc.);
Provide student reports as necessary;
Provide specific support and guidance with foundational level math and science skills and concepts (e.g., algebra, geometry, chemistry, physics).
Communicate progress with students and parents regularly.
Collaborate with the Director of Academic Support on a study skills programs to support underprepared students:
Lead small groups to help students develop executive function and study skills to support academic success;
Collaborate on alternative resources, workshops, and programs to help students develop learning skills
Other duties to support the Academic Affairs Office:
Proctor afternoon and/or evening study-hall, cataloging attendance, monitoring progress, and proctoring assessments as requested;
Perform special assignments determined by the Academic Dean;
Maintain active awareness of office processes to seek improvements and synergies where possible;
Meet regularly with the Director of Academic Support
Other duties as assigned.
Job Specification
Bachelor's Degree, learning behavior specialist or equivalent degree preferred
3 - 5 years teaching and/or experience working with adolescents who are overcoming academic-related challenges
Excellent organization, oral and written communication skills
Diplomacy to manage challenging interpersonal interactions
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community
Ability to manage, and sensitivity to, highly confidential information
Excellent technical (MS Office), and data entry skills
Ability to multi-task effectively
Ability to work independently with initiative, as well as be a part of a team
Detail-oriented
Physical Job Demands
Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal, analyze data and figures, and read
Ability to frequently sustain substantial movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers
Ability to frequently receive and communicate information
Ability to occasionally stoop or kneel
Ability to occasionally lift/carry/push up to 10 pounds
Working Conditions
The worker is mainly in an office environment and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
