Description:

This position assists special education teaching staff in a school setting by performing instructional and other support tasks with small groups of students and one-on-one with individual students. This position assists with independent living skills, social/emotional needs, behavioral needs, and/or medical/physical needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.

  • Works directly with students with a variety of special needs.

  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.

  • Manage student behavior across settings using consistent and positive intervention strategies as directed.

  • Elicit specific behaviors from children as indicated by the instructional program and individual plans.

  • Implements, enters and tracks Individual Education Plan (IEP) data.

  • Assists with physical management of students including lifting, moving, positioning, feeding, and toileting or diapering under direction of the teacher.

  • Assists with de-escalation and physical restraint protocols consistent with district-provided training and individual plans as directed.

  • Assist with the implementation of student health plans per the school district nurse and medical professionals in the community. Training to be provided by an appropriate resource.

  • Works with students in various community/school sites including field trips, community centers, grocery stores, post office etc.

  • Escorts and supervises assigned students in various activities (music, PE, counseling, recess, library, etc.).

  • Models appropriate behavior with students, the community and staff.

  • Presents subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques as planned by the teacher.

  • Confers with teaching staff on the progress of students.

  • Assists staff with record keeping, copying, filing, grading assignments and taking attendance.

  • Monitors and assists students as needed.

  • Assists with loading and unloading children to/from buses.

  • Assists the teacher in developing and implementing educational materials.

  • Follow the daily schedule as outlined by the teacher.

  • Assists the teacher in the set-up and maintenance of the classroom, materials and supplies.

  • Assists the teacher in scheduling appropriate meetings and completion of paperwork.

  • Participates in scheduled staff meetings as assigned.

  • Participates in and completes state-required paraeducator certification training as facilitated by the district.

  • Engage in special training and/or coaching, as directed, to meet unique needs of assigned student(s).

  • Maintain appropriate and secure confidential records, information, and inquiries.

  • Ability to relate to children and their families in a positive and cooperative manner.

  • Ability to relate to staff in a cooperative and positive manner.

  • Other duties as assigned by the principal and/or Special Services Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least eighteen years of age, High School Diploma/GED, Associate Degree, 2 years of college (transcripts required) or passage of Published Paraprofessional Assessment.

  • Proven ability to work with children.

  • Proven ability to follow directions and procedures with a minimum of supervision.

  • Proven ability to work with a variety of staff members in a positive manner.

  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality, specifically with student records, behavior, or academic concerns.

  • Computer skills.

  • Ability to follow all district safety rules. First Aid card required.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Employees must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

  • Physical ability to lift 25 pounds to shoulder height.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

  • Ability to effectively manage student transition to a variety of locations (e.g. P.E., recess, buses and lunch) throughout the day.
