SUNY Cortland is seeking a dynamic, creative, and engaging Learning Strategist in the Disability Resources Office. SUNY Cortland prides itself on being a welcoming community and encourages a wide range of applicants. The Disability Resources Office has 5 committed staff members interacting regularly with over 1000 affiliating students.

The Learning Strategist position is a part of SUNY Cortland's dedicated support of the developing cognitive and behavioral abilities of our neurodivergent student population with an emphasis on recognizing existing executive strengths and finding areas for growth.

In their role, the Learning Strategist will assess and decide what executive functioning skill is needed and administer individualized executive function support providing learning strategies based on best practices in educational research for students with disabilities, aiding students in maximizing their academic performance and educational outcomes.

The Learning Strategist position is an 11-month obligation. During the fall and spring semesters (30 weeks), Disability Resources is open Monday

  • Friday from 9:00a.m.

  • 5:30p.m. During non-semesters (20 weeks), is open Monday

  • Friday 8:00a.m.- 4:00p.m. This position may work occasional evenings and weekends for events and programs.

Major Responsibilities

  • Work directly in a coaching/counseling model with a caseload of students, overseeing the provision and coordination of various forms of executive functioning skills support which includes but are not limited to learning strategies, study skills, goal setting, time management, problem solving, self-monitoring approaches, and decision making.

  • Work one-on-one or in groups with students with learning differences to develop skills and strategies in executive functioning skills, notetaking, reading, writing, and test preparation.

  • Teach student learning strategies to COR 101, COR 201 classes.

  • Maintain confidential notes, schedule appointments, and utilize documents in the Disability Resource AccessCortland database.

  • Assess, analyze, and track data of student outcomes for ongoing planning and program development.

  • Facilitate face-to-face student meetings, regular student check-ins, and communication with parents, college personnel, and relevant offices on campus as needed.

  • Educate students about useful campus resources such as The Learning Center and Writing Center and make referrals when needed.

  • Engage with the Division of Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning to lead programming with faculty to improve outcomes for student learning.

  • Prepare semester and annual reports with current data and experiences.

  • Meet with students and parents during Open House Events and Orientation for incoming students to explain the type of assistance that is offered, answer questions, and present transition program materials.

  • Oversee testing accommodations in the Test Accessibility Services Center, on a limited basis during the semester by proctoring exams, recording testing accommodation information, and scanning exams to faculty.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

Reports to the Disability Resources Director, working within the Division of Student Affairs, collaborates with disability resources staff, parents, faculty, staff, and departments on campus as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working with individuals with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Disability Studies, Education, Inclusive Special Education, Educational Psychology, Learning Sciences, Adult Learning, Counseling, Social Work, or related field.

  • Certification in Academic Coaching.

  • 5 years' experience working with individuals with disabilities.

  • Experience working with college students with disabilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)

  • Knowledge of how individuals learn.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the components of executive function skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to use evidence-based strategies to support student skill development.

  • Ability to design and facilitate training experiences for campus professionals.

  • Express creativity.

  • Excellent written skills.

  • Ability to maintain accurate notes.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to work independently and be part of a team.

  • Proficient computer skills with programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  • Knowledge of assistive technology apps and tools that would be useful for students with disabilities.
