The Learning Specialist assists students in utilizing effective learning strategies and creating individualized educational completion plans to enhance medical student success. The Learning Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing academic support programs to develop effective learning strategies and time management skills. The Learning Specialist is responsible for assisting in the coordination of the tutoring program and other support services. Responsible for contacting students throughout the academic year by telephone, email, electronic messaging and in-person to assess student needs, and proactively support student progression throughout all four years of the curriculum. Additionally, the Learning Specialist assists students in accessing on- and off-campus services such as counseling, tutoring, career services and other support services related to student success.

  • Student Advising and Academic Planning: Advises students on academic planning, tracks milestones, develops action plans for at-risk students, and connects them to necessary campus resources.
  • Academic Support and Instruction: Provides academic support through teaching, skill development, and creating online resources for study and time management.
  • Student Success Initiatives: Leads student success programs by managing tutoring, conducting workshops, and collaborating on early alert and wellness initiatives.
  • Disability Services and Compliance: Oversees Disability Services, processes accommodation requests, and ensures compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Collaboration and Committee Involvement: Partners with faculty and staff to address barriers to student success, provides clinical rotation support, and serves on the Student Success Committee.
  • Additional Roles and Professional Development: Engages in professional development, and performs other related duties as assigned.

  • None

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Education, Psychology or related field required.
  • Experience working in higher education, with a preference for experience in medical education.
  • Experience as a learning specialist, tutor, or academic coach providing individual tutoring support, study skills assistance, time management strategies and other instructional support.
  • Experience as a classroom instructor (both live and asynchronous) at an institution of higher education helpful.
  • Experience developing and conducting academic success workshops and other student outreach activities to enhance academic success.
  • Knowledge of disability services and experience implementing accommodations.
