Napa Valley College is seeking a Learning Resources Assistant in the Library and Library Services. The Library brings under one roof Library Services, Alternative Media, Testing and Tutoring, Learning Services, and distance learning facilities.

The incumbent in this position will be assisting with the daily operations of the library; performing a variety of technical paraprofessional library support duties; providing support to the Library and Learning Resource Center (LLRC); assisting with activities as assigned; and providing support to students, staff, faculty and community members in using library and learning resources.

This job reports to the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President, Academic Affairs or designated administrator.

This is a full-time, 12-months-per-year, classified position open to regular classified employees in range 11 only. The salary has an appropriate placement on range 11 of the current Classified Salary Schedule. The starting salary range is $4,083 to $4,727/month, with future steps up to $5,743/month. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Assists patrons (e.g. use of library facilities and services, directional and informational assistance, conduct library tours/training, etc.) for the purpose of providing patron support.

Assists the assigned administrator and librarians for the purpose of providing student learning support for information competency.

  • Assists with LLRC operations (e.g. supervising and managing the circulation desk activity, overseeing assigned library functions, training and supervising students as assigned, collection of monies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper and efficient support for LLRC.

  • Coordinates a variety of projects and activities (e.g. compiling circulation statistics, depositing money, mending and reinforcing books and other library materials, etc.) for the purpose of servicing the library needs of the campus and delivering services in a timely fashion.

  • Maintains inventory (e.g. records of periodical holdings, inventory of supplies, ordering and receiving library materials, processing library materials, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date information, supplies, inventory, and historical reference.

  • Participates in committee processes and meetings (e.g. assessment activities, evaluation of services, library consortium, etc.) for the purpose of providing recommendations, reviewing, and planning for library activities.

  • Processes documents and materials (e.g. state reports, assessment data from programs, etc.) for the purpose of disseminating information in compliance with administrative guidelines and regulatory requirements.

  • Processes Inter-Library Loan (ILL) requests for the purpose of identifying appropriate lending institutions.

  • Provides technical support and acts as a liaison to Institutional Technology (e.g. troubleshooting computer or printer problems, etc.) for the purpose of providing printing services and efficient library operations.

  • Provides a variety of library activities (e.g. maintenance of files, supervision of student workers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring operation of the LLRC.

  • Responds to a variety of inquiries from internal and external parties for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and direction.

  • Supports the assigned administrator for the purpose of providing assistance with functions and responsibilities.

Other Functions:

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; analyzing budgets; analyzing data; applying job-related codes, regulations and laws; Library technology systems; planning and managing projects; promoting activities and/or events; communication and collaboration skills; and screening telephone calls.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; office practices and procedures; accounting/bookkeeping principles; community resources; office equipment and technology; recordkeeping and record retention practices; specific library knowledge; and library resources for students with disabilities.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; displaying tact and courtesy; being attentive to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; working as part of a team; working with frequent interruptions; accuracy and attention to detail; adapting to changing work priorities; analyzing issues and determining appropriate course of action; maintaining confidentiality; multitasking; organizing tasks; working extended hours; working with detailed information/data; and demonstrated sensitivity to an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.

Responsibility:

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Work Environment:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience:

Three (3) years of job-related experience.

Education:

Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.

Clearances:

Criminal Background Clearance

Tuberculosis Clearance

Title 8, USC, Section 1324-A requires verification of eligibility for employment in the United States.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of full-time or three years of part-time library work experience.

  • Experience with library technology and basic troubleshooting, including automation systems such as Polaris, CARLX and ILS databases.

  • Ability to prioritize work tasks and make sound judgments.

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills.
