The Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator plays a key role in the stability, consistency, and evolution of the Canvas LMS and associated technologies for effective teaching and learning by facuty and students, and the support of various student and faculty development activities that occur in Canvas. The LMS Administrator is part of the Instructional Design Services (IDS) unit within the division of Academic and Student Affairs, and reports to ithe IDS Director. They collaborate significantly and on an ongoing basis with individuals and units across the University including oher members of the IDS unit, and the Information Technology, academic, faculty development, Professional and Continuing Education, Library, and Student and Alumni Affairs units.

Essential Functions

  • Serve as Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator for Canvas and Canvas Catalog.

  • Provide general management, maintenance, and updates.

  • Manage LTI tool maintenance and support.

  • Manage Cloud-based Tool maintenance and support.

  • Manage and ensure resolution of technical issues.

  • Define, maintain, and ensure LMS roles and permissions.

  • Ensure all technical timelines are met.

  • Implement related communications for students, faculty, and staff (e.g. global announcements, updates, changes, new releases, outages and other technical issues).

  • Support and deliver training and orientation resources for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Mange monthly calls with Canvas/Instructure.

  • Manage Canvas Helpdesk services.

  • Update the units Knowledge Base/Google Doc on an ongoing basis.

  • Coordinate the evaluation and implementation of new and improved Canvas and Canvas Catalog features.

  • Coordinate all technical operations within the Instructional Design Services unit.

  • Administer university licensed technologies online learning technologies including online web conferencing tools (e.g. Zoom, Big Blue Button).

  • Ensure coordination and integration of all online learning technologies.

  • Ensure technical timelines are met.

  • Maintain licenses maintained by the Instructional Design Services unit.

  • Coordinate the identification, evaluation, and implementation of new new tools and technical resources.

  • Support and deliver training and orientation resources for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Serve as the point of contact for the Instructional Design Services unit with the Information Technology unit to ensure effective communication between the LMS, student information system (SIS), and other university licensed technologies. Coordinate data pushes and other functions with IT.

  • Coordinate course maintenance and delivery processes including, process content management and coordination requests, execute ongoing course copy and import/export process, assist with software integration of courses, manage manual courses, and manage Incomplete course processing for those that include Canvas Quizzes. Ensure related technical timelines are met.

  • Collaborate with instructional designers on course development and course revision processes.

  • Generates reports for the unit and university, and performs database creation, querying and data mining functions.

  • Identify process and quality improvements in the course development and delivery processes.

  • Manage the online@muih.edu email account; triage and resolve items received through this email account.

  • Provide occasional project-based instructional design services, including making course materials accessible for individual student accommodations.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with other members of the Instructional Design Services unit, and the Information Technology, academic, faculty development, Professional and Continuing Education, Library, and student and alumni affairs units, and other colleagues across MUIH.

  • Serve on unit and University committees as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in educational/instructional technology, instructional design, information technology, business information systems, or related discipline.

  • At least two years experience in an educational, instructional, or information technology position.

  • At least one year experience as an learning management system administrator.

  • Experience working with a wide range of educational technologies.

  • Experience coordinating LMS, instructional design, accessibility/universal design, digital media and/or instructional technology projects.

  • Experience as a team/project leader on time sensitive requests.

Preferred:

  • Masters degree in educational/instructional technology, instructional design, information technology, business information systems, or related discipline.

  • At least two years experience as an learning management system administrator.

  • Prior exposure to basic instructional design principles.

  • Prior exposure to making digital course materials (handouts, images, audio, video) accessible.

  • Experience with Canvas, Canvas Catalog, Zoom, and Office 365.

  • Experience working in a higher education environment.

  • Experience working with faculty.

  • Experience developing and delivering training and training materials.

  • Experience with online course quality assurance practices and programs.
