STAFF POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Learning Commons Coordinator Department: Academic Affairs

Title of Immediate Supervisor/Leader to Whom This Position Reports: Assistant Dean for Academic Success

  • Expected Daily Work Hours: 8:00am
  • 5:00pm *Expected Weekly Work Schedule: Monday

  • Friday

  • College offices are normally open from 8:00 AM until 5:00PM, Monday through Friday. However, due to the nature of responsibility to the student body, individual offices or departments may have operating hours that extend beyond this period and may include evening or weekend hours. Non-exempt employees will normally work 8 hours per day. Overtime (any hours more than 40 per week) for non-exempt employees is required to be approved, in advance by the department supervisor. Exempt employees will typically work at least 40 hours per week and such additional time as may be reasonably required to fulfill the obligations of their position description. Such additional work may include evenings and weekends and should be described in this document.

Summary of this position:

The Learning Commons Coordinator manages the Scots Learning Commons, ensuring a welcoming and productive academic environment for all students. The job involves two sets of responsibilities - managing a public information/service desk and managing the facility. The Learning Commons Coordinator hires, trains, schedules, and supervises 2 to 3 part-time employees and a team of student workers to answer basic questions about services offered in the Learning Commons and connect students to appropriate support resources. The Learning Commons coordinator also provides security and emergency response services and handles maintenance issues. The ideal candidate will be innovative and collaborative, driving the design and development of the Learning Commons as a new initiative to enhance student learning and support.

Minimum Qualifications Required: (please be specific and respond to every question; indicate none if not applicable)

Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Management, Hospitality, or Education, preferred.

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • Work experience managing a customer service or information desk.

Special skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • Understanding of a liberal arts higher education experience.

  • Ability to work with a diverse population, including a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • None

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds.

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Environmental conditions:

  • Work is at a public service / information desk with limited expectations of uninterrupted or private work environment.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

  • Ability to use standard office equipment.

Primary duties and responsibilities (Typically ~7 primary duties comprised of 80% of the responsibilities):

  • Sets Learning Commons Hours and Opens/Closes the Learning Commons

  • Coordinates security and maintenance issues for the Learning Commons

  • Coordinates Learning Commons staffing and hires, trains, schedules, and supervises part time Learning Commons Assistants and student workers

  • Manages an information desk answering basic questions about services offered in the Learning Commons and connects students to the appropriate support resources on campus

  • Manages space reservations in the learning commons

  • Tracks the use of the Learning Commons space and resources

  • Assesses student satisfaction with Learning Commons space and offerings to ensure continual improvement

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students.

FTE: 1 (full time, 12 months, standard business week/hours)
