The Monroe Library Learning Commons (LC) is a dynamic space where students, faculty, and staff come together to study, learn, teach, create, and collaborate. The Learning Commons Assistant will provide in person, contactless, and electronic delivery of library resources and services in a collaborative environment during weekend hours. The position is responsible for managing the library facilities during the weekend, and collaborates with the Learning Commons Director to train, supervise, evaluate, and mentor student employees.

Schedule

  • Hours may be subject to change during the summer or if the university moves to online during any semester. The schedule varies during intersessions, and holidays.

  • This position is a part time non-exempt staff position days and hours are Thursday & Friday 2pm to 6pm. Saturday 10:45am - 5pm & Sunday 10:45am to 4:30pm 20 hours per week. The work schedule varies depending on the university's academic calendar, library hours, and LC desk coverage. This person must be able to work flexible hours.

  • Hours are subject to change if the university moves online, or if library hours change in the spring semester. This job requires flexibility in each semesters scheduling.

Examples of Duties

  • Provide in person, contactless and electronic delivery of library resources in a collaborative environment to library users.

  • Provide contactless pickup of physical library materials to members of the Loyola community.

  • Coordinate with the Learning Commons Director to provide contactless pickup with the assistance of student employees

  • Learn and smoothly execute all system processes and workflow for contactless pickup.

  • Train and supervise student workers who assist with this work.

  • Provide feedback about the services to the Learning Commons Director so that adjustments may be made, if processes are not working smoothly.

  • Work with the Learning Commons Director to locate missing materials, direct users to interlibrary loan when necessary, and read the shelves to find mis-shelved materials in the library collection.

  • Provide excellent customer service to library users over the phone, via email, Zoom, chat, or text.

  • Maintain current knowledge about the university, the library, and the skills necessary to assist users with finding, obtaining, using, applying and presenting information to support teaching and learning.

  • Manage multiple email accounts (including librarylc@loyno.edu in collaboration with others). Become proficient with Zoom, Hangouts, and Google Doc & Voice.

  • Provide seamless handoffs to other library faculty and staff where necessary and direct users to the correct services or people.

  • Handle complex situations with tact, discretion, and equity; exercise good judgment in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.

  • Provide excellent communication to library users, both verbally and in writing, about their library needs.

  • Manage the library facilities on weekends, when other library faculty and staff are not physically present.

  • Maintain building occupancy counts and other statistics and reports for Learning Commons services using Google Sheets.

  • Assist users with printing services

  • Maintain security of library equipment and collections.

  • In collaboration with the Learning Commons Director, train, supervise, evaluate and mentor LC & stacks student employees.

  • Assist in the daily maintenance of study and learning spaces. Oversee the daily building checklist and report information about ordering supplies for the LC and the building. Report issues to the Learning Commons Director and make suggestions.

  • Effectively handle emergency situations. Document and report problems to

  • designated faculty and staff and University Police as appropriate.

  • Communicate with the Learning Commons Director about weekend activities.

Typical Qualifications

Required Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • College degree, or two years of college and two years of library work experience.

  • Excellent customer service skills, demonstrated ability to work in an active learning environment and juggle multiple tasks.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication and writing skills, and clear evidence of

  • ability to interact effectively and cooperatively with faculty, staff, students and others, both in person and online.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, motivated to learn new skills and concepts.

  • Willingness and ability to make temporary or permanent schedule changes to ensure optimal staffing of the service area.

  • Strong commitment to team-based work and a high degree of accuracy in complex, detailed work. Ability to accomplish tasks and projects alone and in cooperation with others.

  • Skills and experience in the use of computer applications for word processing, scanning, printing, spreadsheets, etc. Basic troubleshooting skills with computing, scanning, and printing.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic library service environment.

  • Library circulation experience.

  • Experience with the Library of Congress call number organization.

  • Experience with Google Suite applications and Zoom.

  • Skills and experience supervising, scheduling and training.

  • Skills and experience in project planning and implementation in a service environment.
