Job Summary

The Academic Success Counselor supports the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs in providing vision, direction, and coordination for the College of Osteopathic Medicine programs, initiatives, and policies. The Counselor's primary responsibilities include direct work in programs and services that support student counseling, progress, career planning, and well-being including support of the faculty development activities. The Counselor will be expected to practice, advocate, and promote the highest of standards for scholarship, academic achievement, honesty, and professional integrity.

  • Assist WCUCOM and WCU in the implementation of their respective Mission Statements, Statement of Purpose, Institutional Plan, and Financial Plans;

  • Deliver services to WCUCOM and MBS students as related to career, personal, social and educational counseling; with referrals for psychological counseling as needed;

  • Counsel students in their understanding their learning styles, identifying effective study strategies, learning ways to overcome potential barriers to success, and formulating/monitoring academic improvement plans;

  • Collaborate with the Academic Affairs team in the development and presentation of workshops and small group activities as relevant;

  • Assist with the development and implementation of innovative and contemporary student support methodologies and ideas as advanced by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medici ne (AACOM) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA);

  • Provide counseling and advisement of students regarding academic progress and COMLEX- USA performance outcomes

  • Work with students on developing strategies for coping skills with personal circumstances impacting personal well-being and academic progress;

  • Manage faculty development activities

  • Develop and maintain documentation of activities

  • Schedule activities

  • Develop pre and post assessments to document learning and utility

  • Align faculty development activities with national initiatives and medical education as well as with the annual WCUCOM faculty needs assessment

  • Serve on WCU and WCUCOM committees as appointed and needed;

  • Other duties as requested

Physical Demands

  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time

  • Ability to lift and carry 15 pounds

  • Ability to travel across campus for WCUCOM-related meetings and business

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, public health, education, or a related field of study from an accredited institution of higher education

  • Experience in academic counseling of students and knowledge of adult education principles

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Professional software.

  • Experience in proofreading and editing.

  • Ability to be punctual and work required hours.

  • Interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently, complete multiple assignments, meet deadlines, exercise good judgment, and demonstrate tactfulness and discretion

  • Verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling psychology, public health, education, or a related field of study from an accredited institution of higher education

  • Experience in delivery of student and academic support services in a professional or post-secondary education environment
