Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Success, the Learner Experience Data Scientist is a full-time position located in San Diego, California. This professional will join the Student Success Team in accessing, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data relative to student learning. The Learner Experience Data Scientist is responsible for creating highly scalable platform components to support real-time analytics and advanced modeling and predictions. He or she is broadly involved in every aspect of the platform including data collection, cleansing, exploration, model training, optimization, reporting, and visualization. This professional will lead efforts to integrate the learner perspective into student success experiences. These experiences include platforms, strategies, tools, services, communications, materials, resources, and functions. The Learner Experience Data Scientist will collaborate with stakeholders across the enterprise, including faculty, course developers and designers, assessment and evaluation teams, and technology groups. This position is an integral part of advancing the organization's mission to serve learners with high quality, accessible, and responsive services and supports. The Learner Experience Data Scientist is expected to be a continuous, ongoing learner who is committed to staying current relative to those the organization serves and best practices for serving these students.
Essential Job Duties:
Work closely with stakeholders to understand complex learning problems and design solutions to meet their needs
Explore data from a variety of sources, both internally and externally available
Fetch/Extract data from internal and external sources
Calibrate and normalize data from various sources
Predictive and Descriptive Model Development (e.g. Regression, Tree Based Methods, Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines, etc.)
Utilize advanced statistical models & machine learning methods
Monitor model performance over time
Stay in touch with best emerging practices & techniques in statistics & machine learning
Provide evidence centered design solutions that enhance student learning.
Recommend Lx best practices as the Student Success Team responds to student needs.
Contribute to efforts to increase usage and effectiveness of student success tools.
Inform strategies that support learners' academic, social, and affective needs and development.
Support scaling personalized student supports and services.
Identify best practices for student communications and outreach, including the use of social media.
Conduct assessment and evaluation of the degree to which student success services, tools, resources, platforms and other experiences are aligned with best practices specific to learner experience.
Partner in the outcomes assessment and evaluation of student success services and tools, particularly as they relate to Lx.
Use qualitative and quantitative methods as appropriate, including but not limited to rapid and iterative usability and concept testing, participatory design, ethnography, contextual inquiry, surveys, focus groups, and summative usability studies.
Apply research methods to analyze large or unstructured datasets specific to student usage, learning, behavior, and response.
Provide recommendations on the strategic, tactical and operational issues associated with the development of new instructional technology to support students.
Solid understanding of applied statistics, predictive modeling, data mining, machine learning, and other quantitative methodologies and a passion for innovating with modern data science algorithms
Knowledge and practical expertise in conventional & emerging methods and techniques including regression, time-series analysis, Bayesian analysis, Decision Tree, Boosting, Random Forest, etc.
Expertise in data analysis software packages or tools such as R, SAS, SPSS, Matlab, Octave, Python
Expertise in processing big data sets from heterogeneous data sources
Experience of relational database systems such as SQL Server and the query language
Familiar with statistical model development methodologies and processes
Highly self-motivated and self-directed, with a keen attention to detail.
2+ years of experience with real world data
Implementing real-time analytics with emerging tools and packages
Data visualization and implementation
Experience of noSQL database systems
Experience of Apache Hadoop ecosystem, Hadoop, Hive, Pig
Knowledge of cloud computing services
Knowledge of object-oriented programming
Bachelor's Degree is required
Master's Degree or PhD is preferred
