Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


You will plan, direct, and continually improve Lean Manufacturing initiatives at the site. Drive the implementation of Lean fundamental competencies (Value Stream Maps, Visual Performance Metrics, WPO, Kaizen, Work Standardization, Gemba Engagement) & transformational competencies (workplace design, inventory controls, capacity flexibility, flow smoothing, value add analysis, insignificant changeover) in order to continually improve performance in quality, cost, delivery, morale, & safety. Communicate and work with other Corning locations to ensure alignment with initiatives, promote best practice proliferation, and ensure inter-plant consistency of systems and procedures. Develop and implement systems, procedures, and projects required to successfully accomplish plant, divisional, and corporate goals/objectives. II.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop & implement a strategy for a self-sustaining lean program. Track Lean metrics to verify effectiveness of Lean improvements. Develop/update standards to ensure sustainability & improvement as well as linkage with divisional/corporate initiatives.

  • Educate and coach plant employees on Lean philosophy, vision, concepts, & expectations. Develop/sustain a strategy & process for Lean training and development (Emphasis should be on coaching teams to accept responsibility and solve their own problems). Overcome paradigms and obstacles to establish a Lean culture. Mentor & provide leadership to site Lean resources.

  • Drive the implementation of Lean manufacturing utilizing validated methodologies and tools.

  • Lead value stream mapping exercises to identify, document, & execute opportunities to improve the business (cycle time, capacity, & cost) from current to future state.

  • Direct the planning and implementation of continuous improvement activities via Kaizen. Facilitate leadership and others "going to gemba" to truly understand & implement improvement.

  • Develop & implement sustainable 5S, Visual Control, Load Smoothing, Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED), & other Lean programs.

  • Facilitate the planning & implementation of workplace flow/layout, as well as equipment installations, modifications, and moves according to Lean concepts.

  • Identify & horizontally deploy benchmark opportunities between Corning locations.

  • Partner with HR to develop & execute strategy for growth & development of site employees by establishing a talent pipeline into & out of Lean.

  • Where practical, support the facilitation/implementation of Lean projects at other OFC locations in an effort to provide continuous improvement with the largest impact, mentoring of resources, & standardization.

  • Directly responsible for performing work in a safe manner & maintaining a safe work environment. Responsible for his/her safety, as well as that of others that may be at the facility, whether working or visiting. Is responsible for observing safe work practices and being proactive for reporting/fixing any unsafe conditions.

  • Plan and achieve budget objectives for expense and capital items.


Expected to be less than 20% but could include international trips.

Education and Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering; open to other Engineering disciplines coupled with relevant experience.

  • 5-7+ years of engineering / project engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Working LEAN Six Sigma Knowledge or Green Belt certification and demonstrated application of tools.

  • Validated leadership, Lean manufacturing, analytical, & problem solving skills.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, systems, and production processes.

  • Working knowledge of computers including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, Project).

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) with ability to present ideas, opinions and data to gain understanding consensus, and support

  • Process/results oriented with organizational and attention-to-detail abilities.

Desired Skills:

  • Prior direct management experience preferred but not required.

Reporting to the VP Operations – EWS Division and working with various site leaders, this position is responsible for establishing the vision, roadmap, and culture required to achieve "zero quality defects" and eliminate all other forms of waste through Lean principles and strong continuous improvement culture. This includes an "end to end" focus on lean & quality from our suppliers, through our mfg. processes, and ultimately to our customers. It is expected for this role to drive implementation of various tools, processes, and training that will enable us to achieve our operational goals (Safety, Quality, Service, Cost Productivity, and Working Capital) in accordance with the Legrand Way Management system. What Will You Do? Promote a strong continuous improvement culture.Drive implementation of the Legrand Way Management System throughout all locations.Establish and communicate the Division vision for utilizing lean principles and a continuous improvement culture to drive operational excellence.Work with the sites to develop and execute on a three-year roadmap to achieve our long term lean and quality vision as well as our short and medium term goals and objectives.Provide training & mentoring on various lean tools that will help us achieve our goals.Work with the sites to analyze data, identify areas of opportunity, and implement kaizen activities or corrective actions to address problem areas / opportunities.Lead and facilitate Kaizen events in support of our goals.Evaluate our organizational structure and recommend improvements to best utilize our Lean / CI and quality resources - including the evaluation of central vs local resources, use of plant "councils", etc.Work with the various site leaders to drive the use of standardized lean & quality tools, share best practices, and benchmark world class companies to achieve a higher level of operational excellence.Coordinate activities related to addressing major customer quality issues with the various plant, business group, and Division resources.
