New York Edge seeks to bridge the opportunity gap among students in high-need communities by extending the school day and year with wholesome, skill-building activities designed to improve New York City children's academic performance, health and wellness, attitude towards school, self-confidence, character and values, and opportunity for lifelong employment.
The school based LEADERSHIP Activity Specialist is responsible for imparting instruction in Leadership to small groups of students (approximately 15). The sites are in middle schools (grades 6-8).
Essential Job Functions:
Implement an approved LEADERSHIP curriculum.
Clearly display the objective at the beginning of the lesson.
Guide peer discussions to relevant leadership topics
Encourage students to complete related projects
Identify brainstorm and design acceptable solutions to social and personal problems.
Articulate with the school-based Site Director in a timely fashion regarding any materials needed.
Document the effectiveness and success of the lessons in a report to the Site Director and the Education Department at the end of each of the three cycles. The use of multimedia e.g. cell phone photos is encouraged.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Has the ability to incorporate age appropriate social and personal situations that help students make thoughtful decisions
Is able to communicate concepts and ideas to others effectively.
Is responsible, reliable and punctual.
Exhibits patience and positive attitudes in establishing good rapport with the students and staff
Possesses good organizational skills and completes all responsibilities in a timely manner.
Teacher Certification or two years experience working with students in developing leadership qualities
Experience in working with urban youth in educational and after school programs.
Previous work experience in teaching leadership skills is a plus.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus.
Location: Five Boroughs Time: 8:00 AM -6:00 PM
At time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
