Brief Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Medical Services Manager (MSM), the Lead Veterinary Technician supervises the Harris County Pets (HCP) Wellness Clinic veterinary technicians, participates in clinical and animal care activities that support the HCPH VPH program.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to the HCP Wellness Clinic staff by creating/maintaining the work schedule, ensuring accurate medical records and conducting training sessions to enhance skills and promote professional growth.

  • Administers vaccinations or medications per protocol and as directed by veterinarians; performs physical exams. Participate in the development or revision of protocols to ensure operational excellence and efficiency.

  • Assists veterinarians with surgery, including sterilization of instruments and surgical area, animal prep and monitoring of vital signs before, during and after surgery and reports changes in condition.

  • Maintains an accurate and adequate inventory of veterinary drugs/vaccines and maintains controlled drug logs.

  • Participates and helps organize various outreach programs such as vaccination clinics and spay/neuter events.

  • Actively participate in training of other veterinary operations staff under the direction of the MSM as needed.

  • Mitigate issues with clinic management software (Avimark) and ensure accurate accounting reports.

  • Build strong relationships with clients through professionalism, excellent communication and compassion.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • At least three (3) years of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary practice or animal care environment.

  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current licensure as a Veterinary Technician with the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (Licensed Veterinary Technician, LVT) or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written).

  • Ability to work well with public and team members.

  • Must use your personal mobile device for our Multifactor Authentication process.

General Information

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work:

  • This is a full time position

  • 40 hours a week, as required

  • Saturday shifts will be required.

Work Environment:

  • This job operates in an animal shelter, animal clinic and professional office environment. which may include noisy environments, such as barking, and the exposure to animal allergens and smells with limited alternatives available.

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines as well as medical equipment.

Physical Demands:

  • This role frequently will lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs with bending, stooping and standing/walking for long periods with some sedentary duties.
