Brief Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Director, Veterinary Operations (DVO), the Lead Veterinary Technician supervises the shelter veterinary technicians, participates in clinical and animal care activities that support the HCPH VPH program. Implements strategies to enhance disease control and the health of the shelter and private resident animals.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists the veterinarians with surgery, including sterilization of instruments and surgical area, animal prep and monitoring of vital signs; monitors post-op recovery and reports changes in condition

  • Administers prescribed medications as directed and vaccinations per protocols and directions from veterinarians; performs physical exams

  • Performs and inventory of veterinarian drugs/vaccines and maintain controlled drug logs.

  • Supervises the work up & medical records entry of all animals placed on adoption.

  • Supervises the shelter veterinarian technicians.

  • Creates/maintains the vet tech work schedule.

  • Responsible for accuracy of medical records entered by subordinate Veterinary Operations staff through supervision and training.

  • Participates actively training other vet. ops. staff under the direction of the DVO and ASV as needed.

  • Participates in various outreach programs such as vaccination clinics, health fairs and mobile adoption events that promote responsible pet ownership.

  • Other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.

  • Perform humane euthanasia of animals, at times, in accordance with state laws and must maintain required certification.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • At least three (3) years of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary practice or animal care environment.

  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Preferences

License/Certification:

  • Current licensure as a Veterinary Technician with the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (Licensed Veterinary Technician, LVT) or equivalent preferred.

General Information

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full-Time

  • Monday - Friday | 40 hrs per week with some weekends

Work Environment:

  • This position operates in a shelter environment which may include noisy environments, including barking and other animal noises.

  • May include pungent smells from animal caretaking.

Physical Demands:

  • This role requires to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs. and bending & standing for periods at a time.

Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
