What You Need to Know About the Role

Joining the Merchant organization as a Lead XD on the Developer Experiences team means crafting impactful and seamless experiences, frameworks, and strategies for developers and small businesses worldwide. Collaborating closely with a diverse cross-functional team, you'll wield your influence to shape decisions and deliver top-notch Developer Experiences enabling small businesses worldwide.

At PayPal, individuals in our Lead XD role are fundamental game-changers, guiding teams towards solutions that are rooted in deep customer understanding. This involves capitalizing on data and research, effectuating design ideologies, and shaping effective decisions throughout the product development journey. Starting with insightful inquiries and culminating in polished, user-focused deliverables, our Lead XDs combine their roles as proficient narrators, discerning listeners, avid tech advocates, and masters of their design craft to drive impactful solutions.

As a Lead XD at our organization, you will play a pivotal role in leading efforts to design Developer Experiences, requiring a strong understanding of the developer mindset and the challenges they encounter when writing code. You will bridge the communication gap between Developers and Merchants as you craft experiences for both audiences.

Your impact will be evident in championing developer needs and streamlining their journey, informed by your ability to empathize with the intricacies of coding and development challenges. Your collaborative aptitude will be essential in driving the execution of projects and forging partnerships that unite developers and merchant teams. Your leadership will be demonstrated through guiding the onboarding of developers, facilitating smooth product activation, and offering strategic insights that align with developer and merchant objectives to drive global business value.

Communicating design rationale clearly and championing organizational change will be key in fostering developer-centric design and integrating cutting-edge technologies to elevate user experiences. In your capacity as a Lead, you will be pivotal in creating frameworks, devising overarching strategies, and simplifying the intricacies of our systems to enhance experiences for both developers and merchants.

Your Day-to-Day

  • Lead the proactive identification and resolution of complex customer problems by defining and addressing gaps in their journey, advocating for customer needs, and influencing product direction through user research and data insights.

  • Champion insights, frameworks, and principles as a vital liaison between design, product management, and engineering teams.

  • Demonstrate mastery in design tools and techniques, setting and maintaining high standards.

  • Elevate craft expertise by strategically influencing, leveraging, and contributing to design systems, style guides, patterns, and assets to create intuitive and high-quality experiences for developers. Develop frameworks for complex systems, ensuring enhancements cater to specific developer needs and streamline processes effectively.

  • Foster effective collaboration across teams and stakeholders, honing communication skills to articulate design rationales clearly and persuasively, thereby influencing not only immediate teams but the entire organization.

  • Drive organizational change by instigating improvements in workflows, advocating for user-centric design, implementing new technologies, and promoting innovative approaches.

What You Need to Bring

  • Bachelor's degree with 5-7 years or Master's degree with 4-5 years of experience in design, research, or related fields, demonstrating a deep understanding of customer needs and market trends.

  • Extensive track record in designing products and platforms, including native apps, with a strong emphasis on both consumer and enterprise experiences, encompassing systems design at a strategic level.

  • Advanced proficiency in utilizing standard design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Miro, Asana, and similar platforms, with the ability to mentor and uplevel team members in their usage.

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams to ensure technical feasibility, translate customer requirements into data-driven hypotheses, and lead the development of innovative solutions that address customer needs and market demands.

  • Exceptional communication skills to gather feedback from developers through diverse methods like user testing, surveys, and interviews, and to articulate design concepts and rationales in a compelling manner, influencing stakeholders and fostering collaboration.

  • Extensive experience in working with cross-functional teams to drive the development and delivery of developer tools, enhancing inclusivity, and fostering alignment towards shared objectives.

  • Familiarity with coding and practical experience in computer science, software engineering, or a related field preferred, showcasing a strong grasp of technical concepts and constraints to effectively collaborate with engineering teams.

  • Outstanding change management skills, demonstrating agility, resilience, and the ability to drive change initiatives, promote innovation, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Demonstrated curiosity and a passion for pushing boundaries, exceeding customer expectations, and driving meaningful impact, inspiring and motivating others to innovate and strive for excellence in their work.
