LEAD TOOLING ENGINEER

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead a team of tooling engineers on major projects including the design, analysis, fabrication, and integration of production tooling primarily at the Brownsville, TX production site

  • Work to bring new critical capabilities on line and drive continual process optimizations to increase production rate, operational efficiency, and reduce cost across the site

  • Work closely and coordinate with automation/controls engineering, weld engineering, vehicle engineering, and leadership teams to ensure system-level requirements are met with all designs

  • Review and approve designs of team members, provide technical leadership through proficiency in mechanical design, and grow the skills and efficiency of the team

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • 3+ years of professional experience in mechanical CAD design and FEA analysis

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering

  • Previous leadership experience

  • Experience leading complex, multi-disciplinary design and build projects at SpaceX

  • Experience with automated production tooling design

  • Demonstrated project ownership in a field/hands-on/operational type role

  • Experience with metallic fabrication processes - conventional and CNC milling/lathing, welding, waterjet, laser tracking, precision assembly

  • 2+ years of experience with Siemens NX 8 or later

  • Proficiency with at least two of the following FEA programs: ANSYS, NX Simulation, Femap

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willing to travel

  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed

TOOLING BUILD ENGINEER (STARSHIP ENGINEERING) RESPONSIBILITIES: * Take extreme ownership in the delivery of the Starship production line * Provide expertise with respect to cost, complexity, and timeline reduction during design phase and manage fabrication of critical tools * Collaborate with vehicle and tooling designers on better design for manufacturing * Interpret technical drawings and documents with regards to manufacturing and fabrication processes to create accurate manufacturing planning * Validate and ensure planning documents are maintained throughout the manufacturing cycle * Interact with numeric control (N/C) programmers, welders, machinists, shop personnel, outside suppliers and engineering owners to ensure flawless and timely execution projects * Source, retain, and advise new and experienced vendors from a technical perspective * Drive the manufacturing of projects and verify all critical information is provided to complete the project(s) * Communicate status to engineering owners on regular basis and as requested, present and execute opportunities for design changes that would accelerate fabrication * Travel, as required, to domestic SpaceX sites as well as vendors to support fabrication and installation of projects * Creatively work projects based on company priorities to meet and exceed aggressive need dates * Design and lead the fabrication and sourcing of tooling aids, supporting equipment, and specialized hardware to enable rocket production BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering * Experience in a shop fabrication environment * 2+ years of manufacturing design experience (student project team and internship experience qualifies) PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: * 1+ years of tooling manufacturing experience within the aerospace, automotive or metal fabrication industries * Project management experience in fabrication shop environment * Experience with Unigraphics NX and Teamcenter CAD and PLM systems * Detailed knowledge of Siemens NC or similar CAD and PLM packages * Knowledge of 3, 4 & 5 axis CNC milling, welding, waterjet programming, tooling fabrication and assembly * Comfortable interacting daily with design engineers as well as shop floor technicians * Mechanically inclined, proficient with all types of hand tools * Positive, "can-do" attitude and ability to work in a very fast paced environment * Proactive, self-starter attitude and ability to own on projects from womb to tomb * Skilled in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, parts lists, and specifications * Strong analytical, computer, and written skills * Strong understanding and application of GD&T * Understanding of basic structural analysis and solid mechanics as it relates to fabrication ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * Ability to lift 25 lbs. unassisted, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying may be required to perform the functions of this position * Work schedule may vary depending on site operational needs, which may require extended hours and flexibility is required * Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments - heat, cold, rain * Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise * Occasional travel may be required, up to 15% ITAR REQUIREMENTS: * To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
