The Lead Surgical Technologist is an unlicensed individual who performs routine and delegated duties according to the standards of practice of hospital and unit policies. They function under medical and nursing supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.
Lead surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate physician's performance of invasive and surgical procedures. In addition, they perform duties related to sterile processing, supply and equipment management, preference card management, and management of environmental controls. Lead Surgical Technologist work is differentiated by participation in more advanced operative procedures, orientation and training for specific shifts or procedures, care and maintenance of specialized equipment and higher responsible levels of activity for specific surgical services within the department. Lead surgical technologists are also expected to serve as preceptors for surgical technologists and senior surgical technologists; as well as students in the perioperative environment.
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization and completion of a accredited program of surgical technology and 5 years of surgical technician experience or Graduation from an accredited school of Surgical Techonology required.
