Establish the sterile field and prepare all the sterile equipment used for a particular operative procedure. May also act as first surgical assistant to the surgeon.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate operations/schedule daily with each department, charge RN, Executive Director, ASC Manager.

  • Manage equipment acquisition/maintenance/repair with Executive Director and ASC Manager.

  • Direct contact for Vendor Reps with Executive Director and ASC Manager.

  • Create daily/weekly assignments for OR and SPD staff except for nurses.

  • Assist the ASC Manager in procurement of equipment required for daily operations.

  • Maintains sterilization documents as required for quality indicators.

  • Coordinates orientation and training of technical staff.

  • Assists the surgeon in performing the surgical procedure, anticipating the surgeons instrument and procedural needs.

  • Prepares for surgical cases by providing the proper instrumentation, supplies, equipment, and sutures.

  • Maintains asepsis during all phases of the procedure(s).

  • Assists the OR RN in preparation and maintenance of the operating room prior to, during and following the surgical procedure.

  • Assists in accounting for all sponges, needle, and instruments used during a surgical procedure with the circulating nurse.

  • Assist in assessing, ordering and maintaining inventory supplies.

  • Communicates appropriate information to surgeons, nurses and anesthesia team concerning patient care.

  • Safely carries out physicians orders accurately and promptly.

  • Provides necessary material, supplies, instruments and equipment in good working order for the completion of the surgical procedure.

  • Keeps nurse in charge apprised of unusual occurrences, room activity.

  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to crisis situations during the perioperative phase, seeking assistance as needed.

  • Assists in maintaining and updating surgeons preference cards.

  • Participates in quality improvement monitoring

  • Responsible for ensuring the ASC has all requirements to complete scheduled cases each day

  • Work directly with purchasing agent to ensure proper PAR levels and inventory.

  • Cross train on Femtosecond Laser equipment

  • Provide the highest level of eye care, adhering to best practices in infection control and prevention as set forth in ASC policies and procedures to achieve quality outcomes that enhance the lives of our patients.

  • Gather all supplies for the particular operative procedure.

  • Establish a sterile field using appropriate technique.

  • Check for the proper functioning of all sterile/non-sterile equipment before the operating procedure begins.

  • Assist in the operation by handing the surgeon the requested instruments.

  • Assist in restocking supplies, rotate inventory of supplies and pull supplies for the next day cases.

  • Maintain basic understanding of ocular anatomy and relationship to the procedure performed in the ASC.

  • Has a working knowledge of all autoclaves and knows how to determine the appropriate cycles for specific cases.

  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Must have completed a surgical technician course in an accredited vocational school or have equivalent work experience.

  • Must also have six months of previous surgical technician experience.

  • Surgical technician certification is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have a current CPR license.

  • Weight may vary depending on patients weight.

Location: Work takes place in a normal surgical environment. Travel to other CVP locations may be necessary to fulfill essential duties and responsibilities of the job. Thus, those needing to travel for work must have access to dependable transportation, and driving record must meet company liability carrier standards.

Exposure: Works in normal surgical environment. This position requires working various hours, as the surgery center is generally open from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. May be exposed to blood or bodily fluids. May also be exposed to various cleaning supplies.

Equipment: Phaco machine, unipolar cautery, bipolar cautery, smoke evacuation, autoclaves, indirect ophthalmic scope, portable light, Cryo unit, light pole unit & telephones. Other equipment may be used as needed. Must be able to work with precise tools and equipment; must have dexterity to use these items correctly and safely. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment.
