Job Summary:

The Lead Security Officer provides for the safety and well-being of Hawai'i Pacific University students, faculty, staff, commercial tenants and property through enforcement of college policies and procedures, tenant rules and regulations and pertinent city ordinances and state revised statutes.  Preserves peace through conspicuous patrol, responds to calls for assistance including emergency and crises situations, and provides other safety related issues.  Ensures maintenance of a secure and safe environment by following the procedures in the security standard operating procedures (SOP).   Will manage administrative functions on behalf of all shifts.  The position is a security lead position, which assumes a leadership role of all security officers on the shift. In the absence of the Security Manager, the lead will oversee security operations.  This position has a variable shift schedule, to include both day and night shifts.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Mandatory State of Hawaii Security Guard Certification required within one month of entering position.

  • Valid State of Hawai'i Driver's License.

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certification required within six months of entering position.

  • Experience with security procedures, key control and fire safety.

  • Experience with cash handling.

  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook and other applicable programs required.

  • ICS 100 for Higher Education, introduction to the Incident Command System, FEMA certification required within six months of entering position.

  • IS-00907, Active Shooter, FEMA certification required within six months of entering position.

  • Ability and training in the use of the Aloha Tower Marketplace (ATM) campus Key Watcher system.

  • Ability and training in the use of the Avigilon camera used at the Aloha Tower campus.

  • Ability to be sensitive toward the cultural diversity of the university community.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to safeguard confidential information.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and work independently.

  • Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities oftentimes-stressful situations.

  • Exhibit strong, interpersonal skills when working with students, faculty and staff, including those with special needs.

  • Physically fit to withstand the challenges of extensive walking, climbing and descending numerous interior and external stairs and campus grounds including multi-level building facilities.

  • Able to work all shifts and extended hours.

  • Must have reliable transportation to all HPU worksites.

Desired Qualifications:

  • One-year experience in security field.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Familiar with different locking devices, fire alarm systems, two-way radios, equipment controls and communications procedures.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a pleasant disposition and an ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations.

Other Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.

  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, if necessary.

  • This position may be considered an essential position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation.

  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.

  • Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position.   This includes a valid driver's license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.

  • This position may also require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle.  Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU's Vehicle Driving policy.

  • Able to work all shifts and extended hours

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

1.Security Procedures (50%)

  • Will work as security lead with additional administrative functions.  As such, will be head of security for all faculty, staff, students, commercial tenants and visitors to HPU campuses during assigned shift hours, and serve as chief point of contact for consolidating and coordinating of the flow of information to the Security Manager and Director.

  • Reviews, sets priority, and consolidates reports for security, key control, and logistics for security related equipment.

  • Performs routine patrols of and through on-campus buildings and the near off-campus areas.  During patrol, investigates and/or reports hazards, unusual of suspicious circumstances to the Director of Security and Safety or Security Manager.

  • Responds to emergency calls for assistance including medical matters, fire alarms and other alarms.  Respond to emergency maintenance issues.

  • Responds to routine calls for assistance including safety escorts and transports, and building entry

  • Maintains the inventory of campus keys through the Key Watcher system.

  • Will oversee unlocking of classrooms and offices as outlined in the Security SOP.

  • Will enforce parking policies and towing of vehicles.

  • Will maintain CyCop patrols of the Aloha Tower Marketplace.

  • Will perform minor maintenance duties incurred during accidents, i.e. mopping of wet floors, removal of tree branch on university sidewalks etc.

  • Monitors the security CCTV system.

  • Ensures proper maintenance and inventory of University security equipment including radios, computers and peripherals, golf cars and vehicles and other issued equipment.

  • Depending on the assigned security post, implement all security policies and procedures appropriate to the post as contained in the Security SOP.

  • Read, understand, and comply with all provisions in the Security SOP.

  • Notify all proper authorities immediately in the case of an emergency and assist authorities as required.

  • Direct and provide visitors necessary information about HPU campuses.

  • Maintain Security logs, and pass on all pertinent information to the oncoming relief guards.

  • Review submitted Incident Reports for accuracy.

  • Ensure closing procedures of tenants are adhered to per Tenant Handbook.

  • Administration (40%)

  • Maintains a weekly log of CyCop patrols of the ATM Campus and informs the Director of Security and Safety of any discrepancies.

  • Conducts monthly inspections of the AEDS to ensure proper working order.

  • Reviews and maintains daily logs, incident reports, and SOPs as direct by security management.

  • Ensures that university security equipment is properly signed in and out and that equipment is accounted for.

  • Conducts daily inspection of the security golf cart for cleanliness and working order and that it is properly charged for each shift.

  • Possess a working knowledge of the Avigilon camera system.  Situations where the camera system needs to be checked to assess a situation or to obtain record of an occurrence requires expertise in operating the system.

  • Coordinates the Daily Assignments and Requests for printing and dissemination to the security post.

  • Maintains and ensures weekly inspection log of the Fire Alarm system at to include alarm panels, pull stations and fire extinguishers are in proper working condition.

  • Inputs appropriate requests for maintenance as reported by security officers.

  • Knowledge in the use of the university Rave Alert and Simplex-Grinnell PA system.  The security lead will activate appropriate alerts on the direction of the Director or designated security manager.

2.Performs other related duties as assigned (10%)

  • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.

  • Assists with seasonal peaks.
