The Assistant Charge Nurse is a professional nurse supervisor who provides guidance and direction to the surgery center's clinical staff, and is responsible for assuring that nursing care is provided in accordance with the Center's policies and procedures, established standards of nursing care and practice, and as defined by the State of Illinois. Under direct supervision of the Nurse Manager, he/she supervises the day-to-day clinical operations of the Operating Rooms when the OR Charge Nurse is not available, including coordination of patient care, troubleshooting of problem areas and the supervision of a professional team which includes nurses, surgical assistants and other staff as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Personnel Supervision When the Charge nurse is not available:

  • Direct, coordinate staff scheduling assignments, inventory control, and operating room turnover efficiency.

  • Work closely with team to facilitate efficiency and patient/physician satisfaction.

  • Oversee daily functions and staffing of operating rooms and make decisions, authorize, and act in absence of Nurse Manager and Administrator.

  • Assures that nursing staff provides patient care in accordance with the Center's policies and procedure, established nursing standards of care and practice, and as defined by the State of Illinois.

  • Counsels and coaches the team by guiding, directing, motivating, and mediating conflict resolution.

  • Assist in promoting a positive atmosphere for staff, patients and physicians

  • Utilizes interactive communication with Manager, Physicians, Charge Nurse and other health care members to provide and implement a comprehensive and integrated plan of care for patients.

  • Assists with staff development, new employee orientation, and training. Monitors and insures staff compliance with policies and procedures.

  • Insures continuity and appropriateness of nursing care during working hours and acts as a resource regarding clinical issues of patient care. Assists in supervising the daily staff assignments and re-assigns based on acuity, volume of patients, and staffing needs.

  • Seeks opportunities to improve or enhance nursing and leadership skills through membership on safety or continuous quality improvement committees, or other special projects within the clinic.

  • Insures staff compliance with federally mandated OSHA regulations.

  • Performs other projects and duties as related to department objectives.

  • Must be able to get along with others, to be a team player, to accept constructive criticism from your supervisor and be able to follow work rules.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The Experiences You Bring:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and an accredited nurse program certificate.

  • Knowledge of nursing skills in accordance with nursing standards in the Nurse Practice Act is required.

  • Must have a current Illinois Registered Nurse license, and current CPR certification.

  • Preferred. Minimum of five (5) years experience in OR, preferably in an outpatient setting, with supervisory experience

  • Experienced in staff role and history of good performance

  • Continuing Education:

  • Actively participates in continuing education activities.

  • Prepares and presents information to co-workers after attending special programs and workshops as appropriate.

  • Accepts responsibility for personal professional development and demonstrates desire for personal growth.

  • Must be able to get along with others, be a team player, accept feedback from others and be able to follow work rules.
