SUMMARY:

Supervises the Production Shift Supervisors and coordinates the activities of a production crew in a way that ensures consistent application of contracts, policy and procedure, so that production schedules are met, worker safety and quality/productivity are maximized, and a work environment that enhances participation in achieving plant goals is obtained.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works as the liaison between upper management and Production Shift Supervisors to assure the continued smooth and safe operation of the production facility that permits the production of high-quality, low-cost glass fiber according to the production plan.

  • Manages the activities of the Production Shift Supervisors and the hourly Crew Leaders so that commonality and consistency is developed in the areas of industrial and labor relations, safety, work performance, training, housekeeping, process stability and reporting.

  • Work in conjunction with management to determine schedules of hours, days, and weeks during which members of the Production Shift Supervisors and hourly staff shall work in conformance with company policies.

  • Work with Production Shift Supervisors and Crew Leaders to assure that they properly apply and adhere to labor agreement provisions, as well as take the lead role in the handling of employee grievances.

  • Works with the Plant Superintendent and the Senior Process Engineer to carryout modifications and training so that production is manufactured in accordance with established procedures and work instructions in order to meet specifications.

  • Participates in decisions regarding hiring, discipline, suspension, and discharge of hourly Glass Plant production employees.

  • Works closely with HR to insure that employee records, vacancies, payroll, vacation and management procedures are maintained.

  • Reviews process and QC data on an ongoing basis to verify conformance to specifications, and oversees setup and adjustments of processes.

  • Applies company policies, administers applicable provisions of labor agreements, and ensures compliance with work, safety, quality, and environmental regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (continued)

  • Determines schedules of hours, days, and weeks during which members of the group shall work in conformance with company policies.

  • Arranges for necessary supplies, facilities, and tools and equipment (personal protective equipment, etc.) to enable the work to be performed.

  • Performs all functions inherent to supervisory/managerial jobs.

  • Adheres to general and key job responsibilities as defined in Hollingsworth & Vose ISO 9001 based Business Management System documentation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Required Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college, university or technical school; or 3-4 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Required valid Oregon driver's license.

  • Required ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Required ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Required ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

  • Preferred training in managing people, personnel communication, constructive confrontation, coaching and discipline, and principles of SPC.

  • Preferred certification and application of LEAN processing tools a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work involves occasional exposure to environments with high levels of heat, noise and dust.

  • Have the ability to interact at all times of the day with employees, contractors, agency representatives and members of the community in a professional and friendly manner despite periods of high stress.

  • Have the ability to frequently sit at a computer, potentially for extended periods of time.

  • Have the ability to walk regularly throughout the facility while wearing the appropriate PPE: steel toed boots, hearing protection, safety eyewear and respiratory protection.

  • Have the ability to occasionally lift objects up to 50 lbs.

  • Have the ability to occasional climb roof ladder, stepladders, and stairs and walk elevated catwalks.

  • Have the stamina to stand and flexibility to stretch/reach, bend/stoop, squat and kneel repetitively during the work day.

  • Must be able to occasionally work evenings, nights and weekend shifts and occasional extended hours to meet the mills supervisor staffing, meeting and training requirements.

  • Reviews process and QA data on an ongoing basis to verify conformance to specifications, and oversees setup and start-up of processes. Must learn the process controls and Wonderware system.

  • Applies company policies, administers applicable provisions of labor agreements, and ensures compliance with work, safety, quality, and environmental regulations.

  • Studies production schedules and establishes worker assignments. When necessary, calls in employees to fill vacancies.

  • Tests for adequate job training, assists workers in solving work problems, and conducts employee qualification reviews.

  • Assures time and production records are accurate.

  • Confers with other supervisors or Crew Leaders (EDM, Shipping and Receiving, Maintenance) to coordinate activities of individual departments.

  • Works with crews in problem solving techniques and continuous improvement goals to increase effectiveness of the plant.

  • Writes work instructions.

  • Participates in decisions regarding hiring, promotion, demotion, suspension, and discharge of members of the group.

  • Plans, assigns, directs, and provides leadership for the work of crews on production machines or processes within area of responsibility.

  • Arranges for necessary supplies, facilities, and tools and equipment (personal protective equipment, etc.) to enable the work to be performed.

  • Performs all functions inherent to supervisory/managerial jobs.

  • The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.

  • This job is supervising the off shifts and weekends.

Production WorkerWest Groton, MA

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Production Worker will be responsible for operating, assisting, and supporting paper machine operations. This involves working with high speed, continuous process equipment and forklift operation. Once trained, the employees will be assigned to an entry-level position or utility position. Upon successful completion of a 90-day probationary period, they will become members of the USW Local 0880 bargaining unit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation of the Paper Machine and reminder, assisting in materials movement, labeling and packaging, collecting and removing broke/scrap materials, performing cleaning and housekeeping tasks in the general Mill area and other tasks as assigned by crew leaders and Supervision.

  • General knowledge of safe practices and safe performance of all duties, including proper use of PPE, proper operation of fork trucks and attachments, strict adherence to all safe practices and guidelines and general safe conduct at all times in the Mill.

  • And other related duties as assigned or required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.

  • Work experience in an industrial environment preferred. Paper Mill experience a plus.

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC:

  • Computer skills and able to conduct work tasks on computer systems are preferred.

CORE COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful candidates will be team players with good communication skills (English), good math and mechanical skills, safe working records, and the ability to work effectively with others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTS:

  • Candidates must be able to perform typical physical aspects of the job, including standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), sitting, bending, reaching.

  • Ability to use PPE as required to perform work safely.

  • Acceptable hearing and eyesight required.

  • Requires working 12-hour shifts rotating shifts including alternating weekends.

  • Position involves working in Mill and Warehouse environments.
