Lead Post-Award Manager, Assistant Director of GSO, or Associate Director of GSO, University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The Grant Support Office in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) seeks to hire a Lead Post-Award Manager, or Assistant Director of GSO or Associate Director of GSO depending on qualifications to support a wide range of exciting research and scholarship across the university's largest college. The CLAS Grant Support Office (GSO), established in 2018, provides a variety of support services to the college's 37 academic departments ranging from health and hard sciences to the arts and humanities.

The Lead Post-Award Manager will manage a talented post-award team and help CLAS researchers navigate the financial and reporting requirements of awarded grants and contracts. The successful candidate will also manage post-award finances and compliance for one or more assigned departments. An especially qualified and experienced candidate may be named Assistant or Associate Director of the GSO.

Key Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Supervise post-award research support staff and provide leadership for the GSO post-award team (lead group meetings, provide mentorship and training, streamline internal processes and reports).

  • Evaluate the overall effectiveness of the post-award team and adjust work assignments as appropriate; develop and implement initiatives to improve post-award services.

  • Manage externally and internally funded grants and contracts from both federal and non-federal funding sources, ensuring compliance with federal and university cost principles.

  • Independently and proactively forecast and manage accounts and provide independent post-award financial management of grants and contracts, including ongoing review of actual and projected expenditures.

  • Analyze and reconcile monthly financial statements for a multimillion-dollar portfolio of grants. This includes forecasting and monitoring financial projections from grant budgets and salary release departmental accounts.

  • Recommend and process expenses and change of status personnel appointments to ensure awards stay within budget and comply with federal and university grant regulations.

  • Determine annual and summer salary for faculty from grants; compute salary grant release funds allocated to departments and faculty members. Determine and track dollar and percent effort on grants and set up cost-sharing accounts.

  • Serve as a liaison with departmental administrators and principal investigators from other departments, Grant Accounting, Division of Sponsored Programs, Accounts Payable, and sponsors.

  • Communicate with departments and labs to share university and sponsor compliance updates.

  • Help to develop CLAS Grant Support Office (GSO) team meeting agendas and may lead or co-lead GSO meetings.

  • Assist the GSO Director in developing and monitoring metrics of GSO productivity/success and participate in the evaluation of program effectiveness.

  • Stay abreast of current trends in research administration, changes in sponsor requirements, and uniform guidance as appropriate.

  • Assist faculty with development of compliance information as required for contracts and grant proposals.

  • May collaborate with pre-award support staff and faculty to ensure compliance with contract/grant terms in accordance with university policies and state and federal regulations.

Hybrid within Iowa: This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Education Required

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience administering grants and contracts, including experience managing budgets for federal, state, and/or private sponsors.

  • Experience managing awards from the National Institutes of Health and/or the National Science Foundation.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as demonstrated at an extensive proficiency level.

  • Demonstrates a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Extensive proficiency in Microsoft computer programs, particularly Excel.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in accounting, business, or related field.

  • 6-10 years relevant experience.

  • Experience managing sponsored project funding in an academic setting.

  • Experience working with the University of Iowa Research Information System (UIRIS) and University of Iowa financial reports.
