Performs venipunctures and other patient specimen collections. Has thorough knowledge of testing and collection requirements.
Trains and serves as a resource for phlebotomists and lab assistants. Ensures competency of phlebotomists and lab assistants and consults with appropriate individuals to resolve problems and issues.
Essential Job Duties:
Collects blood utilizing venipuncture, fingerstick, or heelstick syringes competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible and processes specimens per policies and practices of the laboratory.
Effectively assists with bone marrow slide preparations and performs therapeutic phlebotomies
Trains phlebotomists and lab assistants and documents competencies.
Cleans/disinfects equipment appropriately and maintains work areas.
Maintains inventory and supplies in processing area and frozen section room
Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties.
Performs clerical work as needed
In conjunction with lab leadership, provides counseling to employees as appropriate.
Oversees all document logs in processing area
Assists and facilitates downtime procedures
Creates and maintains schedule to adequately staff processing area
Maintains Kronos as requested
Troubleshoots and offers instruction in troubleshooting processing area equipment.
Meets with Admininstrativee Director and Medical Director as needed to address departmental operations pertaining to processing area.
Knowledge of information systems application for laboratory management. Confers with Laboratory Leadership in assisting LIS with interface and data storage requirements that meet regulatory compliance
Makes suggestions/recommendations for improved operations to the department, facility.
Effectively communicates both orally and in writing.
Effectively performs other duties as assigned.
Education: High school graduate or equivalent with completion of a phlebotomy training program.
Experience: 2 year phlebotomy experience. Lead or supervisor experience preferred.
Certification by ASCP, NCA, AMT or educational training with State of Nevada Board approved program and demonstration of the ability to perform venipuncture and other specimen collections regarding laboratory and pathology specimens as appropriate. Chain of custody experience preferred.
License/Certification: Phlebotomy certification required upon hire (Laboratory Assistant or Point of Care analyst license may be substituted for certification). Laboratory Assistant or Point of Care Analyst licensure with the State of Nevada within 6 months of hire.
Other: Basic computer knowledge required, Adequate leadership skills addressing scheduling, counseling, training, and promoting Service Excellence.
Note: Prefer previous experience as a Lab Assistant to assist the Medical Director in the maintenance of the histology/frozen section areas; i.e., changing stains, specimen disposals, temperature/equipment logs
