The Lead Phlebotomist oversees the blood collection / specimen receiving processes of the Laboratory on assigned shift. Oversees or manages workflow at the specimen receiving table, and dispatch of phlebotomists as needed throughout the facility. Assist the Phlebotomy Supervisor with management of phlebotomy staff as needed.

What you will do in this role:

1.Knowledge of physiology and function of the venous system of the human body, and collection techniques used to draw blood from patients.

2.Knowledge of human growth and development appropriate to the ages of patients served:

______Neonate; _______Pediatric; ______Adolescent; _______Adult; ______Geriatric

3.Maintains mastery level over all collections procedures; assist Phlebotomy Supervisor to ensure all personnel assigned to department are properly trained for its tasks.

4.Performs specimen collection per policy and procedure.

5.Engages in team planning with Supervisor and other Lead Staff to solve departmental challenges/quality issues.

6.Assists in overseeing all activities in the collections department throughout the Campus.

7.Assists Phlebotomy Supervisor in ensuring staffing is adequate and all collections have been performed in a timely manner.

8.Assists Phlebotomy Supervisor or Lab QA Staff to investigate specimen collection / processing quality issues.

9.Assists with phlebotomy student training.

  1. Helps effectively implement new procedures and processes in the phlebotomy department.

  2. Utilizes computer system for data entry and monitoring of workflow.

  3. Supports and carries out hospital initiatives and goals and initiatives of the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager and Phlebotomy Supervisor.

  4. Exhibits and adheres to ICARE Standards of behavior in all areas of job duties and responsibilities.

  5. Demonstrates professional and independent judgment.

  6. Assists in new employee orientation / training as assignee.

  7. Performs tasks as assigned by Phlebotomy Supervisor.

  8. Utilizes the AIDET Communication model routinely and supports its utilization among phlebotomy staff.

What qualifications you will need:

1.Completion of a Certified Phlebotomy Course (strongly preferred)

2.Demonstrated experience with each of the required areas of expertise in section III below (required).

3.Shows leadership qualities during performance of phlebotomy duties

4.Interpersonal skills to successfully interact with all staff, patients, patient families and vendors.

5.Very Good phlebotomy, computer, and communication skills.

Primary Responsibilities: * You assist in determining the suitability of donors to undergo plasmapheresis prior to venipuncture. * You establish rapport with donors to ensure overall customer happiness with the center to support long-term donation, all while ensuring donor confidentiality. * You respond to and assist with handling donor reactions in accordance with guidelines. * Monitors donor and equipment to ensure health of donors and quality of product. * Sets up, disconnects, and operates the automated plasmapheresis machines including response and evaluation of all autopheresis troubleshooting displays, documentation of exceptions, etc. Ensures the proper calibration and maintenance of autopheresis machines and associated equipment.
