Job Summary:

The technician, under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with all state and federal laws, assist with the selection, procurement, storage, preparation, record keeping, and financial reconciliation, and dispensing of all medications dispensed to outpatients through. Provide guided oversight and coordination of hospice, 3rd party claims, and offsite facilities (Mubea, Aurora Casket, etc.), Discharge Medication Delivery Service (DMD) and/or Specialty Pharmacy. Monitor the inventory and ordering. Responsible for training all new outpatient staff. Will be the primary contact for offsite business partners. Perform medication histories for necessary services such as DMD. They must demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.

Job Description:

  • Answer phone in timely and courteous manner while maintaining HIPPA compliance

  • Immediately greet customers in a warm and friendly manner as they enter the pharmacy and assist with their needs.

  • Assures stock is in date by overseeing expiration date checking of assigned area as well as clean/organize pharmacy following the 5 "S's". (Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain)

  • Assist pharmacist in dispensing of medications in a timely and accurate manner. Understand the intricacies of third-party billing and adjudication and assist the pharmacist or patients is resolving issues in this process.

  • Monitor and track hospice prescriptions assuring proper documentation, accountability and adherence to procedure.

  • Assist with the ordering and delivery process. Understand and be able to complete orders from wholesaler. Including placing order, receiving order, checking in the order, accounting for variance of items ordered and items received, and putting on shelves using "First In, First Out" method and sound accounting principles. Understand the difference between 340b inventory and non-340B inventory.

  • Be able to organize refill and Prior Authorization (PA) requests as well as follow up with the appropriate parties to resolve.

  • Have a mastery of MTM, Specialty or DMD policy and procedures and be able to train other technicians on services

  • Understand unique programs offered; assist with prescription filling and documentation. These include Discharge Medication Delivery Service, Meds to Beds, Social Service prescriptions, Specialty prescriptions and any future services such as immunizations.

  • Successfully receive, order and dispense offsite business partners' medication requests. Understand the process used for each business (MD Scripts, Packedge, and or Microsoft Excel Labels.)

  • A preceptor/mentor for technicians that is responsible for educating less experienced technicians and has exceptional understanding of pharmacy flow and daily duties. Knowledge of and compliance with medication safety policies and trains new technicians to follow these procedures.

Perform patient medication history:

  • Document the patients prior to admission medications accurately and completely.

  • Document resolution of discrepancy in the medical record so that the attending physician can review and reconcile.

  • Organize and deliver medications to patients if needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • High School Graduate
  • PTCB or NHA certification
  • BOP Registration in state where work is being performed per state regulations.

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Critical thinking and problem solving.

  • Customer service skills and reflect the ICARE attitude.

  • Understanding of Metric system and Rx calculations

  • Medical terminology.

  • Know brand and generic medication names for the top 100 drugs as well as drug schedule and purpose.

  • Inventory management.

  • Knowledge of CDC vaccine recommendations.

  • Knowledge of Medication Safety and Medication Therapy Management (MTM) programs and terminology.

  • Medicare B billing.

  • 340 B Purchasing Program knowledge.

  • Perform medication histories.

  • MTM billing.

  • Epic Specialty Module trained, Epic Willow trained, or 15 years-experience on pharmacy management system.

  • Experience working with diverse populations.

  • Proficient in multiple languages.

  • Prescription prior authorization submission experience

Kind and Length of Experience:

  • 12 months of outpatient pharmacy experience.
  • 12 months inventory management experience.
