Position DescriptionProvides a wide range of general maintenance, facility and equipment repairs, natural area maintenance and restoration, or gardening activities based on assigned area of discipline. Responsible for coordination and provision of training activities at assigned locationDuties/ResponsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must perform essential duties to expected performance standards. Reasonable accommodations are made as required for persons with disabilities as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act. * Coordinates and leads classroom and field training activities of equipment, tools, and best practices, including refresher training as required. * Coordinates and leads, training activities for staff in assigned area. * Responsible for working with Human Resources to plan, schedule, and document training. * Organizes and leads monthly discussion on safety with all staff at assigned location. * Monitors and tracks use of tools and equipment, reviews all monthly inspections to ensure safety items are communicated to supervisory staff, and equipment is locked out and tagged out of service if required. * Promotes MetroParks' mission and vision through daily interaction with park users, responds to public questions and concerns, educates and trains volunteers to complete parks, horticulture, or conservation activities with limited supervision. * Serves on committees to plan and implement various projects such as developing park interpretive plans, sustainability practices, safety, trails, etc. * Attends trainings/meetings to enhance job related knowledge. * Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance, and works outside of normal schedule as required. * Performs the essential duties outlined in the assigned technician job descriptions for Conservation, Horticulture, and Park. * Presents safety and training information as provided by the Safety Team and Human Resources, as requested. * Provides service to the public, responding to questions, helping, and providing information. * Collaborates internally, within, and across functional areas, to provide information and service to others in the organization to contribute to the effective operation of the agency and all staff. * Leads volunteers in assigned parks or conservation activities. * Performs other duties as assigned.When Assigned to Conservation: * Conservation Technician Job DescriptionWhen Assigned to Horticulture: * Horticulture Technician Job DescriptionWhen Assigned to Parks: * Park Technician Job DescriptionMinimum QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Acombination of appropriate education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities.The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.An example of an acceptable qualification is: * High School diploma or GEDand three years' experience in assigned area of discipline. * Minimum of three years of experience operating and maintaining mechanical and motorized equipment used in the assigned area of discipline. * Ability to build proficiency in equipment operation and train others to become safe and proficient operators.When assigned to Conservation: * Working knowledgeof plant physiology, phenology, and identification.*
  • Working knowledge of habitat restoration and establishment (seed harvesting, mowing, and burning). * Understanding of best practices for invasive species removal.When assigned to Horticulture: * Working knowledge of plant physiology, phenology, and identification. * Working knowledge of organic and chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. * Working knowledgeof horticulture principles and practices.When assigned to Parks * Working knowledge of, or ability to learn, a broad range of maintenance trade skills (i.e., electrical, plumbing, carpentry, construction and mechanical), and gardening skills. * Working knowledge of natural resources management and the importance of conservation in management of park land.
