General Summary/Overview Statement

Under general supervision, sets up staging and scaffolding, prepares a variety of surfaces for painting or refinishing and applies paints, stains and varnishes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1.Must be able to mix plaster and be able to apply skim coat to wall surface.

2.Applies paint, stain or varnish to furnishings and interior and exterior surfaces of hospital facilities by use of brush, roller or spray compressor. Prepares walls, ceilings and woodwork for smooth, even application of paint by patching, priming, scraping and sanding.

Must be able to match existing colors throughout the hospital by using mixing formulas provided by paint manufacturers. Applies putty and glaze to windows. Fills in holes around pipes and in ducts to minimize problems with pest control. Mixes plaster and applies on surfaces to repair walls and ceilings and to build new walls and ceilings.

3.Spreads drop cloths and applies masking tape to protect surfaces from paint and plaster.

4.Strips and refinishes metal and wood furnishings and fixtures as well as mixes and tints for proper color matching.

5.Applies caulking around sink and toilets.

6.Cleans area at completion of painting / plastering objects.

7.May be required to work weekends or rotating shifts as well as carrying the on-call pager.

8.Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.

Must be able to read, write and follow oral and/or written instructions.

Work requires 3-4 years experience in a related job.

Skills and Abilities Required

1.Must have the ability to apply even coats of paints, varnishes and so forth by use of brushes, rollers and spray compressors neatly and efficiently. Also, must have the ability to mix plaster and retardant and to evenly and skillfully apply plaster to a variety of surfaces and pipes.

2.Work requires the ability to lift heavy cans of paint, and may involve occasional (less than 20% of the time) light to moderate exertion of manual effort in transporting materials, equipment, ladders and scaffolding and regular walking, standing and climbing ladders and scaffolds and extensions of arm in using brushes and rollers.

Working Conditions

1.Work requires exposure to disagreeable fumes from paints, varnishes, solvents and the like (up to 70% of the time).

2.Works in all areas of the hospital where there is occasional (up to 15% of the time) exposure to disagreeable temperature, noise, dirt and fumes.

3.May be required to work within a containment and/or the containment booth.

4, May be required to work with a respirator.
