The Role:

As the optomechanics subject matter expert within of our 3D team, this Principal/Lead Opto-mechanical engineer will partner with multiple product development engineering teams, including the Director of Optical engineering, to hands-on lead the design and implementation of new imaging, metrology, and machine vision products, as well as participate in specification through deployment of machine vision systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead / consult on the design and implementation of precision, low-cost opto-mechanical subsystems that employ LEDs, lasers, optics, lenses, MEMS, and imaging sensors for industrial machine vision products. Total material cost for mechanical elements can be <$100 for="" many="">

  • This is a contributing role with several direct reports

  • Work with and lead mechanical development engineers to specify and produce prototypes, pre-production units, and final products

  • Work with the development team leadership and NPI teams to implement DFM, DFA and manufacturing process design for the vision systems under development

  • Lead design reviews, error budget development and execution of design verification

  • Specify and lead the design and construction of high precision fixtures, calibration stations and other high precision optical stations needed to produce 1K-10K units per year. Work with manufacturing team to implement fixtures and efficient supporting processes

  • Work with NPI team to identify and coordinate suppliers world-wide to source high precision, low cost opto-mechanical, lenses & laser components for production of 1K-10K machine vision systems per year. Work with suppliers to specify and construct tooling for components

  • Construct, track, and help drive project schedules for above responsibilities. Provide schedule updates, risk assessments, etc. to both Engineering and Operation teams

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD package (Inventor, Creo, CATIA, NX)

  • Proficient using GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and ISO 10110 Optical Drawings Standards

  • Proficient of die casting, precision machining, injection molding and stamping

  • Fluency in FEA modal, static, dynamic and thermal theory and working knowledge of FEM tools (SolidWorks Simulation, SolidWorks Flow or ANSYS)

  • Experience using Zemax or CodeV

  • Experience with optical systems or sensors a strong plus

  • Experience in machine vision product development

  • Proficient in precision and opto-mechanical design manufacturing and DFM methods

  • Experience with industrial optical products used for metrology

Minimum education and work experience required:

  • MS or BS in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optics or Mechatronics
  • 10+ years of demonstrated success at the specification, design, development and deployment of optical products with volumes of greater than 1,000 per year.
  • 3+ years of demonstrated experience in specification, design, development, and manufacturing test development of illumination products
