Summary:

Through collaboration with and under the general guidance of the Clinical Manager and Assistant Clinical Manager and charge nurse The Lead ED Nursing Assistant will provide supervision of the emergency department nursing assistant team.

Under the guidance of the Professional Nurse ED nursing assistants work within a variety of assignments throughout the emergency department providing direct patient care to emergency patients. Assist the emergency team with patient flow and throughput procedures observation obtaining phlebotomy and other specimens infection control safety and quality procedures cardiopulmonary resuscitation restocking of supplies and equipment checks.

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIIES:

LEADERSHIP/SUPERVISORY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as liaison between nursing assistants nurses providers and other health care professionals.

Actively rounds all areas of the unit routinely to assess needs and provide support

Assists ED charge nurse to coordinate nursing assistant assignment including behavioral health observation. Facilitates daily and behavioral health observer assignment rotation.

Facilitates meal and staff wellness breaks. May cover breaks as necessary.

Facilitates nursing assistant engagement in and recognition of their contribution to timely patient flow and throughput measures in the emergency department. These include movement into and through triage treatment spaces waiting areas diagnostic areas and at discharge performing phlebotomy to collect specimens and completion of other diagnostics (i.e. EKG blood glucose and vital signs)

Engages and facilitates nursing assistant purposeful patient rounding to address toileting nutrition hydration comfort or other needs.

Ensures patients are placed in a hospital gown for provider assessment patient belongings are secured and labeled.

Ensures assigned equipment and safety checks are completed as per routine. This includes blood glucose monitor quality checks eye wash stations GYN Cart restock of isolation and IV carts and environment of care rounds (EOC).

Contributes to daily unit huddle and staff meeting agenda content. Ensures they are inclusive of pertinent nursing assistant issues topics events and recognition.

Assists with on-boarding new ED nursing assistants. May serve as preceptor or assist with assigning preceptor.

Participates in orientation check-ins with Clinical Manager or Assistant Clinical Manager. Provides input into orientee progress. Assists to identify additional training needs.

Assists with in-services or other educational requirements for nursing assistants.

Provides input into nursing assistant scheduling.

Provides timely/pertinent departmental updates to staff electronically and in person when deemed necessary.

Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) Department of Health (DOH) and additional internal and external regulatory standards by rounding role modeling teaching and coaching.

Monitors compliance with quality safety and infection control measures assisting to update policy and procedure as necessary.

Exhibits understanding of the roles and responsibilities of all team members and recognizes individuals for their contributions.

Maintains a mature attitude facilitating open and positive communication with nursing assistant staff nurses providers and other health care professionals.

Works in partnership with the Clinical Manager and Assistant Clinical Manager on activities such as interviewing candidates participating in hiring decisions and setting objectives. Assists with annual performance recognition summaries and provides input into corrective action plans up to and including termination.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Works under the supervision of the Clinical Manager Assistant Clinical Manager and Professional Nurse within Hospital and Emergency Department policies and procedures. Acts as a resource for Emergency Department team; realizing when to refer specific complex problems to supervisor when clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.

STANDARD CLINICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists with all clinical duties required of the nursing assistant position.

Demonstrates competence in phlebotomy and specimen collection care of specimens; follows procedure for care and handling of specimens. Conduct phlebotomy and specimen collection as necessary.

Assists with treatment room triage bay or waiting area preparation facilitating cleaning or room prep between patients. Moves patients to triage treatment spaces and waiting areas as necessary.

Demonstrates competence in process for preparing instruments and equipment for cleaning and sterilization.

Demonstrates competence in room safety check safety and belongings searches and observation levels for behavioral health patients. Provide observation for behavioral health patients as necessary including break coverage.

Assists with equipment and safety checks or restocking as necessary.

Assists to maintain cleanliness of work areas.

Assists in the transport of patients to and from triage greeter triage bays waiting areas and treatment spaces.

Assists in the overall function of the emergency department under the direction of the Professional Nurse.

Perform additional related duties as required.

ADDITIONAL CLINICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitors prepares and maintains records and reports related to activities including equipment sent for repair and sterilization; solution testing/changing audits etc.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Current RI registration as a Certified Nursing Assistant or experience as an ED nursing assistant preferred.

Current certification in Basic Life Support Required.

Assumes responsibility for own personal growth knowledge and competency by participating in continuing education programs and sharing relevant resources with staff.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

At least 2 years of experience as a nursing assistant. ED nursing assistant preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physicians� offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Ability to work under stress with moderate periods of sitting walking standing and computer use.

Position requires physical strength in moving adjusting equipment and assisting patients. Any hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions
